| Wrong application = consumers fault.
If your fishing is there truly a wrong aication for a rod or reel? Assuming your close to the rod rating?
And what scenario brings this up?
Ps I'm going to run a bass boat as hard as I can on leech this weekend. And if it breaks on water it's covered... But a deep V would be the correct tool. |

What did you break now? |

| I've had a lot of stuff go South on me over the years.
I've had reels fail after a day of light use. I've had guides come off brand new rods. I've had weights come loose in lures from hitting the water, and lures that filled with water on the first few casts. Pretty sure none of that was my fault.
I've also stepped on rods, burned up HS gears throwing double 10's, and smashed lures on a rock.
I'd like to believe that most folks are intelligent enough to know the difference between "this thing sucks" and "I broke this thing", but... |

Location: Detroit River | I had an Okuma 8'6" hvy rod that I mainly used for jigging Bondy baits. I was using it sturgeon fishing & was fighting a 60" sturgeon & when the fish started going towards the anchor line I put my thumb on the spool & pulled hard to keep the fish out of the anchor line. As a result the rod snapped in half (2.5' from the tip)& it was 100% my fault. Okuma replaced the rod. I took the replacement rod (1st time using it)out jigging Bondy baits & what I thought was a fish hitting the lure at the top of my jig stroke (4' off the bottom) end up being a large snag & the rod broke in half (2.5' from the tip) when I set the hook. My buddy told me that the rod never loaded up when I set the hook. I put the blame on the rod & not myself. The majority of rods breaking are the users fault. They either have too heavy of line with too much drag pressure or they may have previously dropped the rod to net their buddy's fish & in the process a small chip or crack occurred from the rod hitting the gunnel & the next time the rod loaded up on the cast or a fish the rod breaks. |

Intentional abuse will get many warranties voided, which is not rocket science...yet some (add your own noun) try anyway.
Some companies offer an unconditional warranty. And people still complain. It's a wonderful world in which we live....:)

Location: Land of the Musky | This is why Tackle Industries went to a limited lifetime warranty a few years ago with no Qs asked. What is best about that is you get to hear the best stories of how the rod got broke.
Top 10:
10: Caught a 12' bullshark in Florida with an XH rod (and got it in)
9: Caught a 100+ lb Tuna with an MH (and got it in)
8: My son stepped on it....and then he fell on my backup TI rod....broke two
7: Casting and my lure caught the anchor rope
6: I ran over it with my boat trailer
5: My buddy ran over my rod after he had a few beers but was trying to "help" me
4: Figure 8 my lure and did not see how shallow we were
3: Missed a monster fish....got mad....broke my rod....
2: My dog chewed it up from tip to butt (this one has happened a few times)
1: Wife got pizzed off I went fishing on a very special weekend. Got home, told her I caught a monster, she calmly went out to the garage and broke a few rods, dumped my tackle box upside down and calmly came back inside and gave me my 10th anniversary card.... (and yes, this one is a true story)
And before anyone says that I am inferring its never a manufacturing defect, not at all. Every rod company has manufacturing defects. From what I have heard most deal with them very well and many times outside of the warranty process. Most companies will stress test rods prior to shipping as well as check guides and this helps but some do slip though and will usually break in the first 10-30 minutes of use or on the first fish. For these guys most companies will go above and beyond and just take care of you. Always take a few backup rods on a long trip

| Those are great, James!
Here are a few of mine:
Broken Rod: Too lazy to make 2 trips up the stairs at the lodge.... Put all my gear over my shoulders, grabbed my rods and my net, hoofed it up the stairs and tried to bolt through the spring loaded door with everything before it slammed shut. I was about 3" shy of making it through the door with my longest rod.
Broken reel #1: Snagged a log with a bulldawg. Set the hook hard. Couldn't get it to budge no matter what we tried. So I had my buddy put the boat in gear, pointed the rod at the snag, and held the spool with both thumbs. Got the dawg back with one bent hook. A bulldawg is cheaper than a new spool shaft and bearings...
Broken guides: "Hey Jeff, you might want to put your rods on the other side of the boat so you don't step on them." *crunch!* "What did you say??"
Busted plano boxes: "Dude, you're standing on your tackle box?" "Sure, I do it all of the time!" (not thinking that I'm about 50# heavier than my buddy) "Huh. Okay. I guess I can stand on this. *CRUNCH!!!* Maybe after I lose some weight, eh?" worth the laughs and fat jokes, anyway.
Busted bucket top aerator: (might have been drinking at the bar before this one...) Had a bunch of fresh caught bait that we wanted to keep, figured they'd all be dead by morning in the bucket. (wild caught bait produces a tremendous amount of excrement...) Had the bright idea to put them in the bathtub in the cabin, and even brighter idea to McGyver the bucket top aerator to aerate the bathtub so they'd be nice and lively the next day. It worked like a charm until the aerator fell in the tub. Those things are not submersible.
Busted reel #2: Trying to see who could cast a Weagle farther. Accidentally engaged the reel after the cast that was supposed to end all casts. It did for that particular reel...
Busted lure: ME: "Hey, throw one by that rock." "What rock?" "Nevermind, I'll do it." *POW!!* "You mean the rock with busted bits of topraider all over it?"
Busted lure #2: "Man, I LOVE fishing these sheer rock walls. *CRACK!!* except when THAT happens!!" |

Location: oswego, il | Busted 6 rods in two weekends. First weekend my buddy goes through the culvert on webster really slow. Boat fishtails, gets against the side and my rods were just over the gunnel. There went the tips on a fig rig, garcia.and two st croix rods. Next weekend my buddy sets the hook on a sucker fish and busts in two pieces my other garcia sucker rod. I break out a st croix avid and tease my partner he will break that one too. In half he did, later that day. |
