Location: MN | Anyone experience similar issues with their Terrova and able to advise what caused it and what fixed it? Ours has seemed to get a little louder over the last year - the motor that turns the motor. However it was livable. Today, if the speed was set near 4 or higher, it made a very loud screech noise when trying to turn right, and the head would not turn. Left was no problem. So when you set the speed down to 3 or below, you are then able to turn right and the noise is much less. But if the speed is 4 or higher, even if the go button or "constant on" is turned off - it makes the noise and will not turn right. I'll probably wind up calling MinnKota but just wondering if any have suggestions on this. Thank you |

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | I had an old PD do something similar and it was a broken gear. New steering asembly was under $100 and took about 15 minutes to replace. Looks like Terrova steering housing is $117 @ Northland. If you can pull the housing apart and diagnose the problem the motor itself is only $27.

| What Will said. Had mine go out first right turns then left during the Schneider this weekend....Knew i should have replaced it last weekend. I have been buying Terrova parts from Northland Marine by mail and would recommend them. Easy to order parts from. |

Unit would stop and not turn one or the other direction? Which did you wind up changing, the Steering Housing or the Steering Housing Motor? Minnkota says to check the wires from Steering Housing to control board. Unplug from control board and apply 12v. If turns properly and the other way when +/- are reversed, then it's the drive housing. |

| Cheapest and quickest to change the entire steering housing as a unit with guts and all. The gears crapped out in mine after 8 years of very hard use. Best to buy the 117 dollar complete steering unit and replace . It was working in one direction but making noise and now won't turn under power at all because the gears are stripped. I milked mine out for about a season and a half after it started making noise. |

Location: MN | I would gladly spend $117 if I knew that was going to fix it. But I hate to spend it and then have that not be the problem. And it doesn't sound like MinnKota thinks that is the problem. |

| Not sure how it could be anything but that. That housing includes the drive motor and everything. Its not an electrical issue its mechanical and all of the guts are contained within that housing. Originally i thought the collar was just dry where it interlocks into top of housing, but over time the squeaking got worse and went from squeaking to a full on screech where the drive would try to catch and every once in a while would but then strip out. |

| No very easy. Pull head off , disconnect housing from base and slide off, slide new one on. |

| Glad that worked for you , i tore my old housing apart and initially found the gear on the drive motor was stripped but upon further inspection found every ball bearing in the thing floating around in the case so problems were a bit deeper than i thought. It was simply wore out all the way around. Amazing how used to the noise you get. I can't believe how quiet and smooth that thing is now. |

| I had the exact same problem this year. Did you also have a little rust on your shaft? I bought the whole steering housing and had it replaced before I cracked my 6th beer. For my own knowledge, I ended up taking the old housing apart and the problem was the bearing located at the bottom of the housing. No problems since and my motor is quiet again. |

Location: MN | I had no rust on my shaft at all. And I would say it took me maybe an hour or a little better by the time you redo it all the connections and slide everything back over the shaft. I think I already threw it out but is it worth saving and rebuilding if it is just the bearing? |

Do NOT discard the idea that your battery charger is not to blame. I went through 2 sets of almost new batteries before I found out it was the charger. Charger said batteries were fully charged. They were not. Battery charger ruined 2 batteries for me!
Read my post above.
I hope for your sake it IS the batteries and you are good to go!!!

| Take a close look at the plastic gears also Propster i had a stripped gear as well as the bearing. Im guessing the bearing dragging so bad created the gear problem. Probably still worth rebuilding for a spare as the gears are cheap. Mine was the little drive motor gear. Took a solid 8 years of heavy heavy use to fry this drive though so not sure how advantageous it would be to save and mothball for 8 years. |

| Had the same issue last fall. Got stuck paying $180 for the new housing assembly from some maytag repair place at the lake about 5 minutes before they closed for the weekend. Easy to swap. Only took me about half hour to get everything back together. |
