I love these lures, but I see the new short fat lures are gaining popularity. Do any of these have rolling problems?

I liked my last TR, but it rolled like heck. I tried the repair and the weight was right where it was supposed to be. So now I'm thinking I won't even waste a can of great stuff to get it back on the water.

I have a Whopper Plopper and I love it because it never ever rolls over, but I think I love it more than the fish do.

If you had $30 to spend, which tailprop would you buy? If you had $50 to spend, which one would it be?

For $30 I'd probably go with a Pacemaker. For $50 I'd probably buy two Pacemakers.

Personally, I have always had good luck with the Top Raider whether they rolled or not.
I had one that rolled, and I caught over 50 muskies and a bunch of smallmouth and pike before the wire ended up breaking. I think if it isn't too bad, it actually triggers strikes.

Did you try replacing the shrink tubing at the back hook? I had a brand new TR that rolled and I tore the shrink tubing off and did it myself....have not had an issue since.

Pacemakers are great. Lake X fb and up never roll but hard to get. I'm really liking the suick nite walker. I replace belly hook with 5/0 to help kel it out a little.

I always replace the hooks on a new TR. Take the 5/0s off and use 7/0s Always remember when replacing the rear hook on a topwater baits, one tine up, two down.

weird, I have a Lac Seul Turrbo that is the worst rolling propbait ive owned to date, and I have owned many..

Rollers for me include - Lake X dr evil, Suick nitewalker, Lac Seul Turrbo...

Best non-rollers - pacemaker, topraider, fat bastard, Lee Lures chopper ( with the keel).. the non-keel earlier version would roll...

Tail baits need to be tuned. Very few are good right out of the box. I e found that if the bait is rolling too much. Open up the blade alittle at a time. That should solve most rolling problems. Alot of tail baits aren't meant to be burned. Replace in belly hook for larger also helps.

That is funny top raiders roll for me ???
I have like 30 AHW baits in all sizes, I do tune them and use different style of leaders
For each one, that will make a big difference if they roll or not.

A guy can't just have one tail rotating top water IMO. They all are very different baits with very different sounds and vibrations. Even the same type of bait in different sizes can be very different, for example a fat bastard is a very different bait than a cannonball JR even though they are the same style bait. Fish will go on different ones depending on their mood or conditions. My favorites in order are modified fat bastard, fat bastard, pacemaker and topraider (old version, new version TR I am not a fan of at all). I don't own a cannonball JR but I know guys who have had great success on them so I will be making room in the box for one before next season. All of these can be tuned so they don't roll. I wouldn't be concerned with the bait rolling unless it is rolling so much that it is affecting the overall action of the bait. As Riverrat said, I think the occasional roll can be a trigger.

The comments on tuning are all appropriate. IMO, a few things make a good prop bait:

1.) Is it easy to start popping at the start of the cast? I hate baits that take time to get going, as the first 1/4 of the cast is an important trigger zone. Some run too high, some too deep. You can modify hooks / add wire sauter, etc to affect this. Ideally the bait starts popping as soon as it hits the water with consistency. If it doesn't do this, start messing with it until it does.

2.) Rolling: IMO they all roll, the question is at what speed. My pacemakers seem to be the most sensitive to this and have to be retrieved slower. The Big Mama Psycho Sister is, IMO, the most tolerant of speed. I've had a decent amount of success in the figure 8 with those baits and the are my favorites. Others' mileage may vary.

3.) How well does it handle floating debris. Some are notoriously finicky while others will just plow throw. This is good to know on those bad "floaty" days.

4.) How easy is to tune the blade to get the desired sound? An addendum to this is clicker styles like the Big Mama Clackers and the Paceamakers: How consistent is the click and how easy is it to tune? I love my Clackers, but nothing sounds like a wooden pacemaker.

The Big Mamas overall have been the best for me, however I have a magnum wood pacemaker that I've put a fair amount of time into tuning / tweaking that at times just can't be beat. It starts the best on the cast of all my baits and has a very unique sound. Sometimes that offsets the fact that I can't speed it up as much in the last third of the cast. Understanding the details of how a bait style triggers and what each version of a particular bait style brings to the table will help you put more fish in the boat.

Lol funny isn't it?

Yeah I've tried to tune the hell out of my Turrbo I also tried to add a little belly weight with no results. Didn't think to try a different leader.

I saw someone mention the tallywacker.. I had an orange one some years back what a sweet sounding lure. It would roll but it sounded so good! I wonder what ever happened to that thing..

Large top raiders with dual blades that spin in opposite directions don't roll till the lure is on plane and the front prop isn't in the water as much as the rear.

Cannonball Jr. for about $50 is my favorite that won't roll. Next would be the giant pacemaker.
