Hey guys,

I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with Kingpin baits. I am thinking about buying one but would just like to know if they are any better than a headlock. They are both very expensive baits but I want a bait that can withstand extended trolling.

Looking to use it this fall when the casting gets difficult. Any and all information on these two baits would be great.

Its a high end trolling lure like a headlock. There is a guy on Facebook that goes by Wick Onez who makes them.

I much prefer Headlock's over a Kingpin, but I've got a few friends that catch a lot of fish on them. Both are nice baits but in everything musky fishing, they each have a time and place.

Would you say that the Headlock is a more consistent all around bait? What kind of lakes should I be looking for to fish headlocks? I am very new to trolling and really have only started recently when it is too windy to fish and I have already made plans to fish.

Thanks,

Mike

They are totally different baits; shape, size & profile. The King Pin looks like a Jake (if you have not seen one) with a metal lip and the lure attaches off the nose as opposed to the Head Lock with its unique adjustable pin. They both catch fish and are both awesome lures but outside of them both being cranks the comparisons stop there. If it were one of the many Headlock inspired baits; knock offs out there would be more to discuss.... You really need to let the fish tell you what they want any given day.... To effectively troll you need many shapes, sizes and wiggles...no different than casting...

It seems, in my humble opinion, that your $$ would be better spent on some production baits in a few different colors/sizes. Get out on the water and work with a few different styles of baits. There is not magic bait out there. That is not to say that baits like supernaturals, king pins, hose baits, pelagics, ect...ect... are not better than production baits, but what makes them or any bait really shine is boat/speed/depth control and being able to read your electronics. Each bait is a tool and has a time/place/situation where it will shine. After you have developed a pattern that works well for you, implement some of these specialty baits that work for your situation. Keep a book with notes in it. It will be hugely beneficial when you need to reference something later. Amazing how much one can forget (at least I do haha)

Thank you guys for the helpful perspectives. I am very new to trolling as I said but just want a couple baits that will take the punishment of trolling. I am probably going to end up getting a headlock first just because it seems like there are more options with them not to mention they are a tad cheaper.

I have other jakes and trolling lures but just want something that's a little more durable. I like something that has a lot of thud so I can see if the bait is working properly.

Thanks again for all the helpful info!
