Never fished Lake Vermilion. Wanted to do a few trips up in the area. For those of you who have fished this body of water, is one part of the lake better for fish over another part? Is East better than West, or vice versa, or can you find good fish populations all over?

I've seen plenty of fish all over that lake.
As you've seen on the map east side has Big Bay and that can be a 'B' in heavy weather.
But there are plenty of places to get out of the wind if need be.
Just such a great lake to fish with outstanding scenery and plenty of big fish.
I'd fish both ends if I could.... wait a minute... I do fish both.
And of course like all ski fishing, can be tough.

Have Fun.

Vermilion is a Sonofabeach to learn.
I fished the East end for 8 years and the West end for the last 9 yrs. Still Learning.
It can be pretty tough, especially if you are trying to figure it out by yourself.
Do yourself a favor and hire a guide... east end one day and the west end the next day.
you'll be years ahead, believe me.

On the east end, if you see boats on a spot, find something similar, maybe smaller, and fish it. Those community spots are that for a reason, lots of fish on them. But those fish give you a "Vermilion" a lot, but it is a sick and twisted musky addict's type of fun to see a low to mid 50s give you the fin. And the thing with docks, it can work all year. Fish shorelines adjacent to structure too, especially isolated docks. Run and gun, find active fish and go back on them during majors. They will bite when they want to tho, just matters on the timing. If you see a boat with an eagle wrap, flip him the bird too. That gray goateed dude will appreciate it.

This has been the worst year I've seen, for muskie fishing.
It's been a tough year for me, and everybody I've talked to.
Hopefully, it will pick up soon!

Does a guy need to worry about hitting rocks with his prop/boat when geting around the lake, or is it marked well?

It's marked pretty well. Not to say there aren't any rocks that could jump out in front of you. If you keep an eye on the markers and the gps you shouldn't have any surprises though.

Hazards out in the main lake are well marked - hazards in smaller bays are not and they will find you - I speak from personal experience. The markers are put out by the locale Sportsman's club and they do a fine job but cannot possibly do every spot with a rock. I would also advise giving the markers that are there a wide berth - I again speak from personal experience - - - -

Hope this isn't too late but those marker bouys on the rocks...yeah they aren't always sitting right on the rocks! It's a hazard ... AREA!!!

Scope them out on calm, high sky days to get to know them or keep note in mind. Trust that.

Thanks for all the info guys. My son and I have made it up to V a few times now since I asked the iniitial question. In 2 days of fishing we saw about 6 fish (one giant mid 50's) and caught a 44" at first dark. There really are an endless number of places to fish BUT also there seems to be an endless number of fisherman as well. We were fishing one rock point (where we saw the giant fish) and an island a few hundred yards away had boat after boat after boat hit it. In less than an hour we saw at least 10 different boats fish around that island. Crazy. With that said, howeever, it really is a fun place to fish and we look forward to really learning it and trying new spots each time out. Might even go there again today. Thanks again for the info.

Glad you had a decent trip. It is a crazy lake. I like to fish it early to mid week because it seems less people fish it then and I have better luck. I also have better luck during odd times (not around the full or new moon). I did catch a 38 while up there this year. All the community spots were packed but I did catch mine on a community spot. Found some new spots that hold fish that I am excited for next year.

The lake gets pounded, probably as bad as the metro on some weekends, especially the east end. Getting cut off is a regular occurrence on that lake which can get frustrating. That said, those fish that see baits all day will eat when the window opens. A buddy and I got 4 in an hour including 2 50's on one small spot last summer that had boats on it ALL day. Sometimes I think you are better off fishing all night vs all day.

Nershi your right.
They eat when their ready.
Community spots always give up fish when the time is right.
Now finding a big girl off the beaten path is always a possibility.
