| What type of grease do you use for trailer wheel bearings? Is there any special marine type grease? Never greased my own before.

I just had a bearing go out on my boat trailer while coming home from the cabin the other week. How often do people change out/grease their bearings. Do I have to change them if I am re-greasing a lot?

Location: Hayward, WI | I clean, grease and replace seals every year, replace bearings every 3 years.
I also feel my hubs every time out to see if they are getting warmer than normal(no brakes) and jack up my tires and check for slop or roughness in the bearings a couple times every year. |

Sorry to get off topic but I feel like the question was answered by a fair amount of people. I just had a bearing go out on my boat trailer while coming home from the cabin the other week. How often do people change out/grease their bearings. Do I have to change them if I am re-greasing a lot?
Part of the answer depends on how often you trailer. Some people will say they last 20 years, but not tell you they only trailer 3 times a season. How far you drive and how often will determine when and what kind of maintenance is needed. I check my hubs regularly and add grease at the start of the season. I do a full replacement every 3 seasons. I trailer about 40-50 days a season, average distance is 30 miles one way. I haven't had any issues. YMMV.
I know some guys who just don't want to worry about it and pay to have the full replacement done every year. |

Thanks for the reply. I trailer quite a bit but usually only 30 miles, from Chanhassen to Mound (Lake Minnetonka). Other times I am making trips and traveling up to hundreds of miles. I would say that I trailer more than the average person because I have the boat down in the cities and don't have a dock spot.
