| I promise I have done searching and I do not mean to beat a dead horse here, but I am just looking for tips and advice for my first trip to LOW. My father (also his first trip) and I are staying at Red Wing, and I guess I just have a few questions. Should we expect to get most of our action on main lake reefs? How far do we have to travel from our lodge to get good action? I've heard the guy running Red Wing is very good about getting you started. If you guys fish a rock structure over the top with buck tails and topwater, and you do not see anything, do you recommend going over that same path and cast towards the deeper water with dawgs and cranks?
Thanks for any help or PM given. Seems like a lot of good people on this site willing to help out, and I appreciate any advice you are willing to give. Oh, also, paying attention to old posts, I did purchase a 6214 map from Thornes.

Location: Lake Country, Wisconsin | By reefs, I assume you mean isolated offshore rock piles?
While those can certainly be great, there's a lot more to fish than just those. Isolated cabbage in August is great for big fish in Canada.
Basic general advice....if you are driving by shore or an island and you see a small outcropping (a "mini point) sticking out that has boulders/Rock/reeds then stop your boat right there and fish it. As far as working a spot twice over? Not saying that wouldn't work, but there's so many good spots and barring cold fronts or extreme heat waves that just really isn't necessary 90% of the time...I think most guys here would tell you to have at least one person throwing 8s/9s/10s at all times barring a massive cold front .... |

Location: Waukee, IA | Look for complex structure of any kind. Strings of very small islands, weedy bays with reefs on one or both sides, etc. That time of year they will very likely be out and about cruising the main lake structure so just cover water and you'll find fish. As for lures my first choice would be blades (8,9,10 doubles) then fast moving crankbaits then topwaters. If you get a cold front the fish will stop cruising and move to either a sharp breakline or thick weeds closest to the structure detailed by others above. After a front jerkbaits and rubber will be good in deeper water and anything weedless for the cabbage patches. |

Location: Glen Ellyn Il | when searching for good spot, you need to find good structure, weed points are really good if found by deep water. there are lots of good rock structure, look for underwater points that extend in to deep water, most of the time an island may have one underwater shelf that extends to deep water, the rest of the shore would be a waste of time. I usually go to the Navionics app before my trip and study the area that I want to fish and find all points and underwater shelves. some sand bays with scattered weeds will also produced fish for me. Just remember Buck Perry said that the home of the fish is the deepest water in the area and it's all about breaks and break lines and the weather is a major factor. Steady stable weather will put fish in the boat

| My dad does not use baitcast feels. He just refuses to learn how. He does have a nice spinning set up for big pile and muskies, however. But because of this, this pretty much rules out dbl 8,9,10s for him. He loves casting jointed shallow raiders. I assume these probably work alright. Anyone have luck on these? |

| Time to teach the old dog a new trick. I have taught everyone of my girlfriends over the years to use baitcasters without issue.
Last summer I taught my girlfriend's 8 year old daughter to throw a baitcaster. She was proficient with it in less than 5 minutes. If you teach them right and control the tension, very few backlashes. When they know they have to pick out their own backlashes, they are much more careful on their casts!

| I have always run the Navionics Premium North chip in my Lowrance. I have an older chip and it doesn't have 1 foot contours in all of Sabaskong, but it marks rock hazards and that's all I really care about. |

| he'll be fine with spinning gear..throw on some 40lb spider wire, good leader and small prop bait like a Lee Lures mini-chopper...he'll likely get a nice 3-4 minute fight if he gets a big one .. don't be surprised if he out fished ya with your fancy muskie gear  |

| Been going up there for 24 years and I still learn stuff, the last 2 years we just started trolling our fall stuff when we have not seen big fish shallow in August and it has paid off on the last 2 trips. In the last 2 August we caught the biggest fish trolling when and I repeat WHEN we did not see them shallow for what ever reason. Last year last day we where tired of not seeing big fish so we trolled and in 5 hours got a 49" two 45" and a 43" fatso pike and had a couple a fish on then off, it was a hot flat day and nothing was moving went to "FALL" spots and had a ton of action !!
