| I have a 4 bladed aluminum Mercury prop that I want to paint, so as to make it look like new again. There is bare metal showing on all of the outer portion of the blades. I will be picking up a spray can of Mercury "Phantom" Black paint from the dealer next week.
Have any of you painted an aluminum prop before and are there any tips or suggestions you might have for me regarding this project? Any feedback would be much appreciated.
Thanks,

Location: Minnesota | The company. I work at builds aluminum cabinets for the navy. They have to be anodized first or the paint will just flak off. There might be a primer you can put on first |

| Buy can of wax and grease remover to use before paint. After it dries spray a self etching primer on the areas you plan to paint. After that drys spray the paint on.
I skip all that and just use 99 cent black paint from walmart every once in a while. |

Soo just what does an aluminum prop guy look like? What makes SS so much superior besides the price? |

Location: Sawyer County, WI | Is it OK to have an aluminum prop if you have an aluminum boat ?
I can understand having a stainless prop if you have a glass boat but since tin boats are already a lost cause I'd think even a dinged up prop would acceptable. |

don't forget the fancy tin boats ... we'd have to get a ruling on what makes the distinction. |

Location: Elk River, Minnesota | I say any prop that is on the boat is acceptable so long as it propels the boat forward and gets you on the water to fish!!
As for painting aluminum, your first step is to ensure the prop is very clean of all finger marks, oil, etc. A good acetone or alcohol wipe would do well.
After cleaning and prepping the prop:
1) Get a can of etching primer. What this will do is etch the bare aluminum and allow the promer to adhere to the bare aluminum itself. From there, you can use whatever paint you would like. The paint should not flake off, but will wear as normal on any prop.

| Pretty Prop......
paint the blades white and the hub yellow so it looks like a daisy. maybe add a lady bug decal on a blade for that Martha Stewart Pa-pow factor! |
