The big reef hogs have much less side to side motion than the smaller ones. More subtle side to side, almost more like a Suick. I weighted mine and change the weight depending on how much water they soak up and the action I want. I got lots of lookers last fall w/ a 12" but no takers. I prefer the 6" and 8" versions this time of year.

believe it or not the 10-12" Reef Hawgs are pretty much for trolling in my book--they kind of wander around beind the boat doing their own thing. 'Just too much wood to work like a 6": it's a totally different bait and doesn't have the quick changes of direction that you can get with the small hawgs. Besides, the 10" is too muck lumber to lob all day for my taste--my shoulders cramp just at the thought of casting a 12" reef hawg soaked with water or weighted down.

You are right about the trolling aspect. Both baits were designed to the demand by out east trollers. They are an excellent trolling bait when a shallow presentation is desired. I use them on planer boards when fishing large weedy flats. If you want to cast them you have to wait between twitches for the bait to swing. They will not swing much, experiment with twitches.

Good luck, Murph

Does you're buddy know what the *&^% he's talking about??? He probably doesn't want you to catch any fish at all... Maybe he really isn't you're buddy, just says he is.

I bet when he told you to "soak 'em", he said put 'em in gasoline didn't he?

I've got a "buddy" just like that.

=)

You did not buy the wrong baits. I have been throwing 10" and 12" Hawgs for three years now, and let me tell you they produce LOTS of BIG fish. My buddy and I have caught at least 15 fish over 20lbs on these baits. No pain, no gain, your arms, back, and the rest of your body will be sore. But Big bait equals big fish. We prefer to work them very quick with no weight added as they are heavy enough. Target structure with deep water access (20'+), and cast as far in as you can. I would say 75 percent of the fish we caught were right at the end of a 100 or more foot cast. Good Luck

I feel a lot better now. I havent been able to get my 10" reef hawg to work for 2 years. It seems like after a while they do perform better, like after an hour of throwing it. Mine almost does a suick type of up\down more than a side to side action. I think I will just troll it now that the Phantoms and Mantas have made a glide bait so much more effortless.

I'm a large glide bait nut as well, The wieghting and placement of the hardware are the key. Luckymaster, sounds like yours has some serious problems that needs more work than just soaking or a changing leaders. Also, I know a lot of guys like the reefhawg, but I personally would never throw a bait without split rings. If you want a custom bait that has action you simply can't get from any mass produced lure check out my site.

write "MF" in the textbox when ordering and I'll make it for half off. I love this site and I know that the people on this site are addicts who will fish them hard.
