My baits stink! So I store baits, except plastic, in plano boxes in the shade in my shop. Noticed that they smell. Is storing them in these planos causing the baits to decay over time?? Is it better to hang baits when not in use and pack when going to fish?

Yeah, I noticed and was trying not to say something! Seriously though what kind of smell? Mildew? Paint?

Are you letting them dry out?

Well was going through a bunch of trolling baits to weed out the ones that I don't use and noticed that all the boxes that have Depth Raiders or Shallow Raiders have a plasticy smell that dissipates if left open but comes back when closed up. Box of Krushers and Tuff Shads have no smell. Went through some double 10's and noticed one group had a smell and the other brand didn't. My concern here is keeping these in planos damaging the finish or the bait. Not to mention, does the smell affect the fish?

I would say smell definitely impacts the fish but I would not assume negatively, I was once told by a very seasoned and successfully muskie fisherman that a bad smell is better than no smell.
