I just picked up a Tuffy 1890 with no motor and I have some questions for those of you who own/owned one. First thing, what kind of performance are you guys getting with motors ranging from 150-200hp. Hole shot, top end, etc. Anyone running a 150 4 stroke? Also, his one is set up for a 24 volt trolling motor. How does an 80 lb do on this hull?

Thanks,

Adam

I've got a 70 lb PD and it does just fine. Can't answer your motor questions as I'm in a tiller with a 90 hp.

Is the tiller the same hull as the remote steer? This is a 2006 that has never touched the water. The interior needs some work but the price was right. I know they made some changes to the hull at some point

I'm in a 2007. As Steve notes, same hull. Great boat, I love it.

How does the 70 lb power drive do in the wind? I've got an 80 lb Xi5 that I took off the boat I just sold so I guess I should just mount it and see how it does.

Thanks Steve. I'm really more concerned with the big motor. Does this boat do ok with a 150 four stroke or should I stick with a 2 stroke if I go with a 150? I'll likely put a Just Encase deck box across the back as a deck extension. More worried about hole shot than top end.

All I ever get to fish in is wind, and the 70 does just fine. I've never felt I needed more power.

I have an 1890 Tiller and I love the boat. I personally would go with the max HP for the boat as I feel you will get the best performance. With a 90hp 4 stroke and I get about 35 MPH and the hole shot is not great, but I am working on that.

Have a buddy with a 150 Suzuki on his 1890. I think it performs very well. He says it's a bit sluggish with 3 guys and the livewell full of water and suckers. If you go 150 just prop it correctly and you should be very happy. I have an 1890GT with a 90HP 4 stroke. It performs just fine. More HP would be better but the USCG says 90 is what we get.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the feedback. I'm trying to find a decent used motor to put on the boat, but I can't seem to find much in a 200 hp. 150 is another story altogether though.

Adam,

Do yourself a favor and put a 36V system on it. You won't regret it, especially if you fish long days and/or wind. Nothing worse than putting in a full day only to run out of juice before prime time. No one ever regrets going 36V, plenty regret not doing it.

If you don't go 36V, I would for sure install one of the chargers that charges the TM batts after the starting batt is fully charged.

I installed a Minn Kota DC alternator charger on my 1760 for a 24 volt Terrova. Mr Brad Nelson gave me the idea (thanks). WOW, it's the best thing I ever did. The thing regulates and tops off the starting battery and then diverts the extra juice coming from the big motor to the TM batteries. It was around $100 and I honestly don't think my batteries have ever gone below 75%. Several of us on here have installed them and we are all very pleased with them. It is also great to have when you are on a dock on a place like LOTW and you have a power outage which always seems to happen. I honestly never worry about battery life........I can't say if you need a 36 volt system on an 1890 but if you are on the fence, installing a DC charger for $100 is less cost than upgrading to a 36 volt system.

This gives you another option.

Have a good day.

yah Brad those MK on board chargers are awesome....I scratch my head why they aren't standard on new boats these days.... probably the best $125 I've spent on my Ranger!

I've thought about putting those on past boats but haven't pulled the trigger for some reason. What's the installation like on them?

The installation is similar to installing an on board charger. Some nuts/bolts & wires. If you have room for to install it, it is a piece of cake. I had to get a bit creative and make a panel so I could mount it under my console where nothing is flat. I also had to extend the wire going to my starting battery so I had to do some soldering of the connections which for me is easy. The purple wire needs to go to a hot terminal so it activates when the key is on.

The instruction with the thing are really bad but the people I called at Minn Kota for help were VERY good.

I hope this helps. If you need more help, give me a holler and I will do what I can to help you.

Brad

Thanks. That sounds pretty easy. I'll probably end up going with one of these regardless of what trolling motor I use.

I am going to begin mounting electronics on this, but it seems like real estate on the dash is scarce on the walk through model. How are people fitting larger graphs on this dash? I have a Cisco mount I was going to use but I can't see any way I can mount my HDS8 with it. I may be able to if I switch over to a Ram mount. Does anyone have pictures of what they did?

Hey Steve. I talked to Kirt quite a bit. Thanks for the suggestion. Is there a way to tell if the boat has had the wedges installed? Hull ID?
