| I have really come to like my Toro Beast for big blades and it's a smaller profile reel too.

| If you are proficient with a baitcaster I would recommend the saltist. Will not cast as easy but with a little practice it cast very well. Built like a tank and has more than enough speed and power. |

What handle are you using? My Toro S 60 with counterbalanced power handle pulls too hard to be good for anything above 8s. I use it as a general purpose reel more than a big blade reel, but that's only my personal preference. |

the one handle it comes with.. my wife and i each have one and find it rather easy and effortless to pull 10's with. 9 foot TI and 9'6" TI rods |

Location: Minnesota | I'm a small guy 5'7" after using my Tranx and getting use to it there is no other reel for blades .then when I switch to my 400 TE it's like using a snoopy reel . I forced myself to use it for a 2 day weekend trip now it don't even notice the size |

Try picking up a jigging beast handle and put it on the Toro S in the middle slot. I have 4 days on mine and haven't had the reel engage during the cast, whereas with the NaCL I had the problem more often than I liked. |

I've used my uncles and it pulls pretty easy, The problem I have is the size of the reel. The thing is massive, and it has a switch instead of a thumb bar for free spool. |

Which model would you guys suggest, the one that I was looking at is 6.4 to 1 gear ratio and I can't imagine that's super easy pulling in the double tens???? |

| With the saltist you want the 20, it palms easy and still holds a ton of line. Make sure you get the black one that automatically engages the reel when you start cranking. |

Find a new or used eBay Calcutta 400b. Should handle blades well, wont burn them but it's a very durable, user friendly reel |

| The 7000 will crank in 10s but the gearing does not hold up well. I destroyed mine cranking in 10s. Out of warranty so the repair costs were about the same as a used one... Not using a 7000 for big blades anymore. |

I don't think the saltist comes in a left hand model. I, too, recommend the LW20HC. You can usually find them on eBay for $189. Or try the Facebook flee markets and get a used one for a bit cheaper. Great reel. |

Location: MN | I used both 7000 and 5500 C3s for a while. The 7000s are very large and a pain to palm. I switched to 5500s and threw everything with them (double 10s prob 50-60% of the time) for 3 summers. Double 10s all day is pretty fatiguing - adding a power handle helps, but even then it is work. I also had a lot of mechanical problems - gears, levelwinds, clutch arms, antireverse bearings, and I even snapped a couple frames right at the base. Some of that is my fault, but I haven't had those problems with other reels. You almost have to carry spare reels on longer trips or risk losing days of fishing time if you break down early in the trip.
I switched to an NaCl 51 for most stuff and it is much easier to crank in big blades. It's also small and comes in left and right crank. Presumably a Toro S 51 would be similar, but it felt a little taller when I held one in person. Both are a little over $150. I still use a 5500C3 for a rod that I throw jerkbaits and wtd topwaters with - works fine for that. |

| I'm looking too and the beast is $400, ouch...
I was looking at the winch but with 5.4-1 gears and only 22"/turn I cant imagine its easy to burn big blades. plus with that high of a gear ratio I would imagine that its just as hard to crank them in as the 5500s....
wish there were more reasonable priced options I can justify $200 after that I'm not sure
and really even after looking at all the options the saltiest looks to be the best, even after compairing to shimanos and garcias. just wish they made a lefty model. its the only reel I can find that has a lower gear ratio and still picks up 30"+/handle turn. a bigger reel doesn't bother me I just need one that does what I need it to do! |

| I think a good option would be the lower geared beast 60 4.9:1 gears and 27 IPT line recovery it's faster than normal with gears lower than Norman and if you added a power handle (if available) that would give you more power for big blades |

Location: Minneapolis, MN | The question is do you want to burn 10's or have a reel that makes 10's easier to retrieve, at the end of the day the only reel that really accomplishes both is the Tranx. If you are willing to accept working harder but being able to burn, then you can get a higher speed reel, if you are willing to accept a slower retrieve but being able to bring big blades in easier, you go with a lower gear reel. And don't get me wrong, I like the Saltist, I have one and I call it the poor mans Tranx, but it's not was easy as the Tranx and it doesn't have a spool brake, which really keeps me from using it for blades a lot. |

| I'd imagine Nacl 61 5.4:1 can be had fairly cheaply if you look around. I found mine under $200 a couple years ago and now it's discontinued. Been a great reel for me, holds up well and a nice medium speed in my opinion. Pulls pretty nice with the power handle. |
