I am having trouble with losing fish on jigs and looking for some pointers or tips to keeping them pinned. I know with the single hook it's going to happen sometimes but I seem to loose more than I think I should. It seems to happen right at the boat I will have one gater roll and off she comes. Any tips to help? I'm using an 8 1/2 ft rod, Calcutta te, 100 lb braid with single wire leader if you're wondering. Thanks!

Mark;
Could be all kinds of variables. I never owned a J-Mac , but have seen them. Thought it was a forged beefy hook. If it has a weed guard, sometimes those also deflect off their jaw, and hook does not get a good bite. If your fishing wood, well then a weed guard is probably a good thing Or must!!!

 The longer Rod is good, BUT a more limber Rod may be better. Does the 8'6" have good flex???

 I feel, smaller hooks have better hook penetration, because of just that...less beefy. the 100 lb braid may be overkill. A 17 - 20lb. XL Mono, or a 40-50 lb braid, with a softer Rod , May hold the fish better.

 I pour my own jigs, and use hooks that are not quite as beefy. Maybe try the cobra jigs..... they have a good penetrating hook,that is not a forged hook.

Maybe  scale down a bit, with your Line and Rod , and fish equipment like your fishing Bass....flipping stick, lighter line....ect...just some idea's!

I use an 8'6" MH rod and 65 lb braid for my jig rod. With as much standing timber as I fish I'm a little slower on the hookset also, no need to lodge my hooks deep into an oaken branch at the first bump. Beings this gives the fish a second to chew the jig it seems to help get a good set. Coupled with the soft rod it lets the hook search for a hold.

Ultimately any time you use a single hook you have to expect a slightly lower hook %.

What jdsplasher said. Also, make sure the gap is correct on your extremely sharp hook. Set the hook point and eye on your palm at the same time and try to gently pull the jig across.

If it doesn't stick a bit immediately, you will lose fish on that jig design.

Your hookset will be poor as well, the rod action is too heavy. Go to a extra heavy action 7' bass rod and 17# to 20# fluorocarbon and your percentages will be 99% in the net.

I use 80lb briad with a LT bass swimbait rod, had great luck fishing the j-mac hook, but prefer some less beefy ones as jdsplasher said.

J Mac.

One other thing to consider...Consider cutting off the weed guards on the J Mac's ( unless you in a ton of slop) they can get in the way. I have caught a bunch of fish on J mac's but moved to more streamlined heads with similar hooks... these days I use more Sunrise Big Hammer Heads, or Kalin &Owner bullets. Also Lazar Trokar makes some great 9/0 & 10/0 weighted swim bait hooks that rock for similar applications.

Mark, another thing to consider, IF you change Equipment like line. The 100 lb braid you used, might of slowed your drop speed....SO, IF U go to a lighter Line, your jig may have to be lighter, or use a plastic dressing to slow your drop speed. All is relative to your presentation.

 If you are swimming your jig, consider a trailer. I try to get fish to hit on the drop, for the most part. They usually inhale the thing!

Any suggestions on a specific rod. I love fishing creatures, jigs, etc, in the 1 oz. range but my muskie set-up are all to heavy.

Find a bass flipping stick in a 3/4-2 oz lure weight ...7'6"-8' length.
