Looking for suggestions, having trouble keeping this motor running in idle. If I throw it into gear and gun it, it will run at full throttle, full speed. Just dies as soon as I go down to idle. Will only stay running in idle if I have the 'idle lever' down. Changed plugs, fuel filters and fresh gas. Ran fine last summer. Anyone have ideas what the next steps would be ? Thanks for any thoughts !

Ever replaced your voltage regulators? I have a 96 150 EFI that did that when one of the regulators fried. Does your tach work?

I have not. And as a matter of fact, my tach has not been working right. Sometimes nothing, then spiking. Is there a way of testing the voltage regs. ?

And thank you for your input !!

Tach going out is a sign of a bad regulator. Regulators are on the back of the motor under a metal plate. Super easy to replace. Did mine in twenty minutes. Not sure how you'd test them. Mine had burnt wires coming out of one (there are two) of them, that's how I diagnosed mine. You're supposed to replace both at the same time.

I found mine for $145 for the pair.

Would you have charging problems (starting, etc) if the regulators were going/gone, or not necessarily?

Had a voltage regulator go out in my old mercury 60hp going across a lake. The tachometer went to zero and starting bouncing all over then stuck at zero. I looked back and the motors oil level display looked grey/white. My dad and I thought she ran out of oil somehow so we killed the engine to investigate further. Popped the hood off and it turned out we had plenty of oil, the grey was from smoke as the voltage regulator had fried some wires and when we opened the hood we allowed oxygen in and flames erupted. I've never seen my dad move so fast for my fire extinguisher. The fire kept re-lighting into flames until we could get the battery unhooked. Funny story now but wasn't a fun experience at the time. That was a long troll back to the access and we didn't even catch anything with a couple rapalas dragging behind the boat on the way in...

I did, but I'm not a mechanic so I'm just speaking from personal experience.

Idle issues on an EFI, things to check - dirty fuel injectors, TPS out of adjustment or failing, fuel pressure issues or motor running cold.

or old fuel lines gummed up from ethanol fuel. This is exactly how my engine acted from old fuel lines. It's a cheap fix and can't hurt, might be worth replacing the fuel system from the tank right up into the engine anyway. Mine would start hard, stutter and idle rough, occasionally stall, it would sometimes hesitate on dropping the throttle, then would go fine and start OK. We cut open the fuel lines and found them full of varnish. Replaced with ethanol-resistant hosing and bulb and new filters, including in the engine, for something like $140 including parts and labor, and she ran smooth after that.
