Anyone else have problems getting their longer rods into this rod locker? My 8'6" +rods need to be flexed quite a bit to get into the locker. Was curious if anyone had remedies for this?

As much as I like my Tuffy you are correct in that the opening to the rod storage could be improved. If even a small section was removed so the rods could go in and out straight that would help a ton. The lid would also have to get modified. I imagine that would take a few mold modification but it could be done for sure. I am not sure a guy could do that on his own and make it look good but I do know one guy who did. In his case he cut a section out and glassed it back in. He could then have the butt section stick out of the storage if he had a really long rod. Not for me, as it may affect strength but he did it.

A few things that help.

1. Always put the rods in with 2 hands. I put 1 on the butt section and the other on the blank and push down with the hand on the blank.

2. Always point your rod guides up so you don't knock them off.

3. I also put my rods in the plastic sleeve when ever I put them in the storage.

I hope this helps and have a good day.

Thanks, I currently use similar techniques. I know the ranger 600 vs series boats used to have a plastic piece at the aft of the rod locker that was probably 3-4" high and hinged toward the aft. I am wondering about cutting out a section and trying to replicate this. My biggest feer is that I won't be able to keep the rod locker lid latched if I tried this.

The guy I know who modified his only modified one side so he didn't interfere with the latch area/assembly but it still didn't solve the entire issue. To truly correct it you would have to remove more like you are referring to however my biggest concern with doing this is if I would be jeopardizing any strength? We can make ours work, just not as easy as it could be so for me I am going to leave it alone. But if you come up with an acceptable solution please show us.

store your rods off to the side, get a rod buckle and a atv gun mount. I have never put a rod in a rod locker in my life....and i've owned ALOT of boats. Even when I used to travel to Minnesota from Indiana...rods were on the deck....never an issue.

I would have to respectfully disagree with this Mike. I have been fishing LOTW for 30+ years at all corners of it too. I can't even count how many things like Tranx Reels I know of that have disappeared. When tackle got specialized and more expensive it seemed to increase too. Most of the time you probably don't even hear about it unless you know the guy and it is probably some disgruntled fishermen. But I know one thing, it absolutely is an issue, so with that said we put all the good stuff away every night. So if you have a boat with acceptable storage, I would use it.

btfish- You bring up a good point. I have been thinking about security with my soon to be coming home X-190. I would love to install a Lock-R-Bar but the way the gunwales do not come down to the deck, you would have to get creative with mounting the bar and I still don't know how secure that would be compared to the way guys mount them in bassboats. I am probably going to go with a combination of motion detector alarms. What are you guys doing to lock and secure your tackle?

Rods in the locker.

Tackle in plano boxes in the locked compartments.

Electronics locked on with Dura Safe E locks.

Yes, I know someone can always get in if they want to. But keeping things out of sight doesn't show what you have and makes it a bit tougher.

A guy with a crow bar gets in our compartments in 10 seconds. I am going to go with a motion detector alarm that gets attached to the cover then small motion detectors alarms on the compartments. That should make enough noise to get my attention. Yes, I am paranoid. Got my stuff stolen from my truck once.

Boat locker lid locks do not prevent theft, they deter theft. No system will stop a determined thief from busting the lid loose from the hinged side, open sides, or locked side. The lid material, whether aluminum or FRP, simply is not strong enough, nor are the fasteners strong enough. A very loud alarm will be of some deterrence.

Yea mike, I don't like to put them in there. I just want to keep them locked in there during storage. When the boat is in use I never use the locker... But I'm going to keep the boat by the lake.
