| Took my boat for a spin yesterday and the speedometer gauge wasn't working. GPS was, but still I'd like the gauge to work.
I can get at the wires underneath the console, does anyone know if this is an easy do it yourself fix? Or should I just have a dealer take care of it.
Thanks! |

| What kind of motor? I would start by looking at the lower unit there should be a small hole in the leading edge and then above the cavitation plate there should be a plastic hose like a fish tank bubbler. See if that is attached by giving it a slight jiggle. If it's not attached that's your problem, if it is. You should be able to find it up at the gauge repeat, make sure there isn't any sand in the lower unit hole (visually). If you were to increase the size of that hole it will throw off the the speed. |

Location: Kodiak, AK | It happens. It's usually not "if" but "when." Most guys just leave it be because 1) it's not as accurate as GPS and 2) it's more trouble than it's worth. But like was said above, it's just a water tube with a little opening on the front of your lower unit that runs up to your gauge. Check for crud in there as that's the issue 99% of the time. |

Location: davis,IL | Probably an easy fix. Find the little hole on the front of your outboard and use a 1/16" drill bit and gently "drill it into the hole. Do not use a power drill ( you could damage the lower unit), but do it by hand by clamping the bit into a set of vice grips. Then just gently turn the bit into the hole. I just did mine and the bit went in about a 1.25" or so and got out a lot of crud. I then unhooked the line ( Hose) where it was spliced together at the front of my motor and blew it out. I blew in the gauge side of the hose and got the gauge to operate. So while I haven't tested it on the water I'm confident that it will work. This was on a Yamaha F150.

| Thanks much everyone. I took advice here and went to YouTube to get more information.
While running the boat during the weekend, I did have some water come from under the dash and onto my shoe. I wondered how that got there. Now that I know the speedometer is linked through a hose with water, I'm guessing that tube either broke or pulled away.
Hopefully I'll be able to crawl under there tonight and see what the deal is. |
