Location: Hayward, WI | I am planning on giving jigs like the Jig-A-Beast a try this year. I want to have a leader tied directly too the jig head and then either a swivel or welded ring on the other end. Any recommendations on what to use for leader material? |

| We use a regular wire leader on our jig set ups, sometimes with a split ring, some times a cross lock snap. Another option is 100 to 150# flouro or Mono leader material. |

Location: Almond, WI | I haven't used it specifically for jigs, but I have used Cortland Toothy Critter Wire with success on other baits. It's a nylon coated tie-able steel braid. A palomar knot works well with it, or you can fuse the coating with a lighter. |

| Use "Knot 2 Kinky" it's better than Cortland's material. It's Nickel-Titanium leader wire meant for direct tie ups to jigs and such. I don't know about you but I want my jig to be directly in line ready to set the hook and not bouncing around on a snap. For all other baits I use a fluorocarbon leader with a snap but not with a jig.

| Clear water/sight fishing I keep it simple and use a 80# or 100# fluoro (depends on brand of fluoro) leader on a lighter bucktail rod. When probing the deep edge of the weedbeds I prefer a 45# to 60# uncoated multistrand leader crimped to the jig with a #7 barrel swivel on the other end. This is on a lighter rod (like a bass flippin stick) and will handle the lighter line (35# to 50# superbraid) that will cut through the water easier to keep you in better contact with the jig (usually 3/4-1oz here in MN) at depth. Leader is made to match his set up. With the crimp and rough, uncoated multistrand wire you can easily slice through any weeds on the leader with a quick snap of the wrist. This not only doesn't waste a cast but it can be a great triggering move. With a 'knotable' wire you will still gather weeds at the knot.

Location: SE, WI. | 7 strand is good choice for slicing of weeds, BUT just does 'not have good shock absorption as a coated wire. Did tests with the 60/ seven strand, and was spooked by how easily it broke compared to a coated wire. I have gone to the 49 strand coated 40 lb. Small diameter TO slice weeds, and I tie directly to the jig. I rarely have any hang of weeds after slicing, and the limp ness of the wire is just like fishing mono. My back up in a pinch is Twist weld. kind of gaudy, BUT won many bass tourneys with the stuff. fish really did NOT shy away from the black color/ coating it had. You just twist it, then singe it with a lighter. use 20lb and 30 lb with this application. 20 lb held up for non aggressive presentation, 30lb held up better for ripping weeds. Heck, guys use this twist weld for sharks in the ocean, in heavier leaders of course! Guys who fish my Jig/creature Combo's seem to like the 40 lb, 49 strand coated...at least I have had NO complaints:) JD |

| That is why I use a bass flippin stick instead of a muskie rod for most jigging applications. Longer rod with softer action that acts as a shock absorber. I'm with Steve on not preferring coated wire. Did the twist melt thing years ago and it worked fine. Nobody is 'wrong' here. It is a personal preference thing and you need to find the one you like and have the most confidence in. Fish don't care! Biggest advice is any time you downsize your equipment, be very aware of any any nicks or damage to your line or leader that may weaken your set up. Jigging is relatively cheap compared to other forms of muskie fishing. When I am targeting fish with just jigs I usually have a half dozen rigged up on leaders so I can quickly tie a new one on. |
