Location: St Paul, Minnesota | I own the Tranx PG, Tranx HG, and the new Calcutta Conquest and honestly of those three I would opt for the Tranx PG, if you're looking to throw Blades and rubber, which is a bit all-purpose in my mind. I'll explain:
Tranx HG: 6.6:1 @ 43 inches per crank. Great for slack line retrieval, but any resistance lures (size 8 double blades and up)pull heavier in the water and I think I can retrieve them faster and longer into the day with my Tranx PG.
Tranx PG: 4.6:1 @ 30 inches per crank. Great all purpose reel, makes everything come in easy. Not the fastest reel anymore, but great for blades, and when reeling slack line (ripping rubber) it's easy to reel faster.
Calcutta Conquest 400: 5.6:1 @ 30 inches per crank. Similar speed to Tranx PG, but more expensive, and less power/gear ratio mechanical advantage.
For the scenario you described I'd go with the Tranx PG. I'd especially recommend the Tranx PG if you don't already have one.
Rock on,

Location: Contrarian Island | Cloud 7, not a chance, have a buddy throw a double 10 on an HG at the same time you throw a double 10 with your PG, same distance, at the same time....your buddy unless he is a wuss will bring in the 10 at least 25% sooner than you do.... how do I know ? cuz I've done it...and I had a PG and they are SLOW compared to the HG.... I spooled my hg about 7/8s full and I use a longer handle on it for more torque.... PGs to me are worthless... might as well use a toro winch...I use an HG all season, 15 hr days on end... for 2 seasons now and I have no issues... PGs are not "burning blades"...I had a guy in my boat last fall with a PG and we would cast and I would have 1.5 casts done to his 1..anyone that things PGs are bringing them in faster than an HG stand next to me and see what happens.... . |

Location: Eagan, MN | I own all three of the reels mentioned here and would agree with Bob and Brad - go for the HG - for all the reasons given and more. If you decide to go with the HG, be sure to immediately replace the short, low leverage stock handle with a longer, stronger handle from the Trinidad 16NA. I think Brad found one even longer that he likes, which you could check out as well. Makes a world of difference in reeling ease. Not to pile on in favor of the HG, but if you do any night fishing with your blades and dawgs, you will appreciate the little bit of resistance the HG provides on the retrieve. When retrieving slow and steady, that little bit of resistance helps tremendously in determining when the tail of your dawg is fouled or whether you are retrieving at the right speed or when a fish has overtaken your bait. The HG just provides a lot more information to your hands than the PG in my experience. The PG is geared so low and is so easy to reel that you lose valuable 'feel' information in those low and slow night situations. |

| I have the PG. LOVE IT. with that said, i can probably mitigate the pain of running an HG all season with an $8 bottle of advil and a few protein shakes in June. if i can pick up the beast in 4.9:1 i''ll be aiming to sell my pg for an hg |
