| If you have the right sized hook for a given bait (for say a Triple-D or Phantom). Then what is the better replacement treble for these baits: a short shank or a long shank treble? Assume the bait is used as a twitch-jerk bait, never trolled.

Location: Yahara River Chain | Really depends on the design of the bait. Meaning, if the distance between hook hanging points are your limiting factors. If the are close together then your short shanks are use, if that are greater like on a long bait then you can and should get away with a long shank. i would imagine that a long shank would be a better hooker due to being away from the bait. But the long shank would be worthless if they continually got hung up resulting in a wasted cast. |

| 3/0 Mustad , short shank , round bend is my go-to hook on bucktails and hard body lures ,,,, really wide gap between the individual hook points ------ jim |

I don't know what good searching would do (which I did) baits generally don't give you replacement hook data, particularly shank length. |

Location: NE Ohio | the short shank mustad hooks are # 35656BR in 3/0. this is the hook that i use on my 7.5" phantoms as replacements. VMC makes a similar hook also.
if your looking for a long shank on other lures i use mustad hooks # 3551 up to 7/0.

Location: Yahara River Chain | If you use the 3/0 thin wire round bend, which is a very good hook, make sure that you don't over power a big fish in a fight, with 80# braid you can easily straighten them out.

Thank you makes good sense, I try to use at least x2 strength if - when possible. I saw some 3/0 Mustads with the new sharpness technology but they are in x1 strength from what I could tell. I like Gamagatsu but they are so bloody expensive. |
