Over the years a lot of trigger grips have gotten "larger" so I was thinking of opening up the mouth of my Down East rod holders where the trigger fits in and as they are reversible the other side could be left just as it is for smaller triggers. Has any one done this ?

yes just cut a larger square hole no problem

Thanks. The problem will be me, I'm a fussy sod so the whole operation will have to be undertaken with surgical precision !

We used a Dremel with a metal cutting disc to make the precise cuts to enlarge the trigger slot, then used a file to eliminate the sharp edges...
Worked great

did you ever grind a st-croix trigger ? is it hollow or solid ?
