Location: Gaithersburg, Maryland | I've decided to go with an onboard charger. I need a two bank system and am thinking about the type with a total of 20 amps (10 for each battery according to the listings). This is similar in power to the two, regular (not onboard) 2/10 amp chargers that I use now. I've also noticed in the advertisements that some are 15 amps per bank. I would assume that these would charge the batteries faster. I've also read (in Bassmaster) that onboard chargers don't really charge a battery fully and that regular chargers are better!! However, I'm wondering if there is a downside (other than cost) to the batteries being charged faster - is there a downside?
Also wondering what features I should look for? Brand & model suggestions would also be appreciated. Thanks - Tom

Location: Angola, IN | Guest Chargers are pretty good. You can find them at West Marine stores or in BassPro shops (I think).
We run a 2 bank charger that is 10amps per bank. Charges both batteries in about 6 hours or less.
The number one feature to look for is a "smart charger". It monitors the voltage of your batteries and charges them correctly. If your battery is really low, it goes into "Bulk Charging" at 10amps. Then it slows down as the battery is recharged (1--9 amps). Finally, when your battery is fully charged, it turns off and monitors you battery, which prevents over-charging...which kills your batteries. If something would kick on while it monitors your battery (like an automatic bilge when it rains, or something like that), it detects the drop in voltage and re-charges the battery accordingly.
The smart chargers allow you to plug your boat in on Sunday evening and not worry about it until Saturday morning. It's real simple and it's the only way to go. |

| I have always used Dual Pro 10/10 chargers. On one it stopped charging one bank. Called them up and had a brand new one at my door in 48 hours no questioned asked. I don't think I would charge with more than a 10/10 charger though, because anything larger than this might heat up your plates to much and cause premature battery life. |
