Location: Madison, WI | 3 of my Abu's developed a screeching noise on casts. Is just a matter of oiling them or do I need repair? I have 10 days before I leave for PMTT Eagle River and I don't know if that will be enough time for me to ship to Abu in Iowa or if I need to find a place here in Madison. All opinions appreciated. Thanks |

Location: London, England | Oil the bearings and levelwind, as long as the bearings aren't worn right out it should cure the problem. Have a look at the instructions on my site, it's for a left handed reel, but it's a good guide. http://www.timkelly.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/lasreel%20maintanence.html |

| Breaking them down to clean and lubricate is very easy. The only trick is to lubricate properly; if/when you do it wrong then you'll probably screw up the functionality of your drag washers. Most people over lubricate. I'm just learning myself, I now carefully follow written instructions I obtained from various sites on the net. You can do it, too. If you can't find instructions, send me an e-mail and I'll piece some info together for you. |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Try a very light application of silicone based lube in the spool shaft and around the left side of the plate where the anti-reverse blocks ride. A drop on every bearing, too. |

Location: Black Creek, WI | Here is my highly sophisticated solution. Dunk the reel in the water and shake the rod back and forth for a few seconds. I know... water is not a lubricant... but it gets rid of the annoying squeel until you have time to properly lubricate as mentioned in the previous posts. |

| The screeching on Abu's is most often caused by the white nylon gear in the left side plate. When the inside hole of the plastic gear gets worn, it sort of wobbles during the cast, producing the noise you hear. At least, that is how it's been explained to me. Lubrication usually doesn't correct the problem; atleast not for long. I'd replace the nylon gears (they're cheap), lubricate, and go on down the road. Problem fixed.

| When mine start screeching, I find that a drop of oil in the levelwind usually shuts them up.

My shimano curado does this too, even after just getting it rebuilt. Does the same rule apply here? Yes, probably - although it's entirely possible though that you've bent the axle, frame or gears if you've been using the reel for throwing full sized musky baits! |

| I agree with 123- the white gear for the line guide probably has worn teeth. I replaced mine when it did that (after inspection) and it worked fine after. Abu sent me a free one but this may not help in your time crunch. Check out the diagram, find the part number and give them a call. |

| All very good answers, but if they really gave a hoot, they'd tell you to open the plate and check for a screech owl! |

Location: Madison, WI | Thanks for all the suggestions, I took them apart last night and greased and oiled them. I didn't have time to test but will after work today. Sponge - I didn't find any hooters er screech Owls in there... |

| Good to hear that dude! The reel owls must be a southern thing; often times it's the nesting material that causes the problem...:O |
