do you catch any northerns while fishing for muskies? I never read about this. All I read about are follows, flashes when figure-eighting, a good day being one with at least a follow. What are the average sizes and on what do you catch them? Large musky lures or smaller lures, say up to 15cm? Thanks!

This year I had Pike up to 42" on muskie baits. Its not uncommon to catch pike, they love bucktails, topwaters, jerbaits, jigs and they really like bright colors.

Pike are a bonus when they are large in size, lots of fun.
Walleyes and Bass are quite common too on these baits.

Always catch a few northern when muskie fishing which is always a added bonus. My biggest northern have come will musky fishing a hand full this year around 40".

As for the other question ,that if catching numbers of northerns, from my experience, is that muskies are not there, and if one big northern is on the spot, there is no chance at a muskie being there, that northern is the fish on the spot.

I love fishing waters that have both trophy Pike and Muskies. Catching a Pike over 20# is as big a kick to me as a Muskie over 30#.

I do very well on big pike using Violent Strike spinnerbaits, medium( Slammer, for example) crankbaits, and glide baits like the Undertaker.

I have also done well on the old standby, Bucktails. My favorite tails are the Musky Buster, and Ghosttails.

If both species are active, I catch both in the same area at the same time. Many times I catch Pike as I work a really big fish on the Goon or LOTW; then up comes the big girl...

Suicks are also a bait that a Pike just can''t seem to let go by, but if I am TARGETING Pike, and am on a mid to late Meso lake, a Creature will outproduce any other lure most of the time.

So they have a different color pattern, they are still an ESOX!! ( and very tasty, too)

I always catch lots of northerns while muskie fishing. Since the Sept long to last weekend I've caught a 45, 3 -40's and numerous from 30 - 39 all on medium bulldawgs while fishing for muskies. Although muskies are not on the same spot as a big northern I have found them on a spot a hundred yards away. I've also noticed that muskie and pike alternate using spots, one day a weedbed can be loaded with pike with not a muskie in sight, the next day no pike but a muskie follows my bait in. So it seems for me, the presence of pike on a spot means no muskie. But I don't mind, because I love catching big pike too, so I'll keep fishing the spot anyway. And if I'm on a good spot and there are no pike around, I can usually bet a big muskie is on the prowl.

I have caught more bass this year than musky, musky fishing. I have caught more pike this year than musky, musky fishing. Usually the bass are nice but you can catch a 20" pike on a 10" bucktail all day long. I have a 30" pike and a 20" bass as my biggest for these two fish for the year.

I enjoy catching northerns if muskies aren't biting, but I especially like to catch a subspiecies called a "weberfish".
It is a northern that after you cut off the head and the tail it fits perfectly on a weber grill!

I fish on waters with a general population of pike. This past summer I lost count on the number of pike caught on a suick, and a viper spinnerbait. The fish ranged from 15" hammerhandles, to a nice 36 incher. I also caught 48", 38", and lost a 45"+ musky in one day fishing areas where the pike were feeding on my jerbait. From my musky fishing experiences, the areas with pike, will also produce musky. This structure includes: weed tops, weed edges, drop offs, points, rock, and wood. I also know that structure holding any kind of bait fish will hold both pike and musky. I would rather have the musky nail my bait than a stupid hammerhandle![]

you just don't talk about catching other species when musky-fishing, I guess. An angler I know went to LOTW and he caught loads of largemouths and smallmouths. I guess they can be disappointing to catch or do they put up a good fight? I doubt it due to the heavy gear that is being used on muskies.
