I am planning on fishing the minnesota opener in the twin cities metro area and was wondering if you thought that it was still too early in the year to throw topwater. What are you thought on this? Let me know how you approach top water fishing during the year. Thanks, good luck this weekend!

Tony,

My simple approach...

Once surface water temps reach 66-68 degrees I will start to use topwater until it no longer is of interest to the fish, which is usually sometime in late October in my neck of the woods.

The only time that it is too early to throw topwater is when there is still ice on the water! Most topwater baits are slow moving without alot of
eratic motion, which should be easy for the fish to follow and strike. The fish don't read magazines or watch videos. You put a topwater in front of the muskies and they will eat it!

My dad caught a musky on a musky buster topwater memorial day weekend about 1 mile from where muskymedic had action. Temps were about 62.

One can still throw topwater during periods of ice; just remove the hooks and attach tiny runners to the bottome of the bait! You won't get any strikes, but you may get a follow or two...

***SVL does this, even if he won't admit it!:O

Last night on Pelican nailed two on a topraider with 65-68 degree surface temps. If it ever is to early to use them, we are beyond that time now!!

Thanks for all your replies, I will make sure to have a topwater rigged up at all times on one of my rods. Good luck to all of you once again. Tommorrow cannot come soon enough!

I will throw a topwater from day 1 until the ice comes back. And like Slamr -- they are not just for the shallows! Don't be affraid to use a topwater in the open water.

Good Luck to all -- 13 hours -- tick, tick, tick.....

Pewaukee lake is pushing the high 60's and the top water bite is on. Last two days 4 fish have been taken on top water baits. Got to love top water.
