I am looking at getting a new trolling motor and adding a quick release plate. I will be keeping the old TM as a back up. Are the plates truly universal? Could I have a terrova on one and a maxxum on the other? Are they fairly easy to swap out and can I mount the new bracket in the existing holes. I know Minn Kota says that, but I just want to make sure their info is accurate.

i do this interchangeably with Motorguide cable and electric ... they are pretty quick, but based on the transducer coupler on my hummingbird up front, i do have to take off and remount the transducer and cable too. still ... it's about a 10 minute switch and well worth it to me.

not sure about the Minn-Kota, but as long as the same base-plate is on the motor end, you are good. you will have to buy (2) plates and they don't sell male/female separately and are pretty proud of a piece of plastic.

One of the Minn Kota brackets works for both the maxxum and terrova. Has holes for both. Not sure if the piece that mounts to your boat will match up with your current holes though.

MKA-47 mount will work for both. I think you will probably need new holes in the boat.

I had to drill new holes for mine, but between the TM that came on the boat, me installing a Terrova and then installing the plate with a Riptide, I was bound to have to need new holes.

Going from a MK maximum to the MK 47 you shouldn't need to drill new holes. I took my fortrex off and mounted it on a mk47 and put my link terrova on a mk48 the top half sold separately so I didn't have an extra base. Only needed to drill one hole that nitro decided not to use haha silly people.
