Location: Waukesha, WI | My friend lives up in Port Wing WI and he's been after me to try the St Louis for Skis. I know its a great Walleye fishery but does anyone have an opinion on its Musky potential? Is it good trophy water? or is it a numbers fishery? or just so so? THANKS! |

Location: Big Lake, MN | We just talked about fishing the St. Louis River/Spirit Lake area at our last Muskies Inc meeting. I just moved to Cloquet, MN 2 years ago and have not fished it for Skis but I do know guys that have caught or moved nice Skis in there. I do plan on hitting the river system several times this year. I'll post my luck or misfortune here.
Good luck to all! |

| I live in Superior and have fished the river for over 20 years. They did some heavy stocking back in the early 80s and you couldn't put a bait in the water without catching a small muskie. Since the muskies started to take hold and produce on their own the stocking has all but stopped.
The numbers of fish we see are down, but when you do find one it's usually a 40s to 50" fish. The muskies are scattered through out the 12,000 acre system and can be quite hard to find. There's a lot of off channel bays and backwater channels. It really isn't heavily fished for muskies either. If you try the river, don't pass up all the shallow bays in the lower harbor area. Good luck. Post how you do. |

Location: Big Lake, MN | Happy Hooker,
Yes I have fished Island Lake North of Duluth but it wasn't for Muskie. I spent two afternoons on the lake with a work fishing league. I was really just out trying to learn the reservoir. It looks like it could be good but I am not familiar with the Res's type of bait fish or if the lake can actually support a good Muskie population. I guess I want to learn more about the waters before I start spending my time there. But I am interested!
Good luck to all! |

Location: Waukesha, WI | Thanks Terry/JNR. Sounds like trouphy water. I will post a report but wont be up there until Sept. I'll have to pry my friend away from his Brown and Stealhead fishing so we can have a crack at those St Louis SKIS. We walleye fish above and below Boy Scout, never even made it to Spirit Lake and Sprirt is Far away from the Habor Area. 12,000 acres is a tough nut to crack.
Good Fishing Too You! |
