| I was out yesterdy fishing a very shallow weedy bay and thought that topwater might be the ticket. So I sharpened up my old favorite original pink and white field mouse Topraider. I have caught numerous muskies on this lure, in fact I'm really not sure how many I have caught on it. I have lost a lot of fish and have seen even more. I have friends, family and clients that have caught fish on it. I'm sure some of you have heard me talk about it, and some of you have seen the lure.
Well on my first cast I noticed she was running on her side, on my 2nd cast she started rolling over on me. It only took me a minute to realize that the internal belly weight had broken loose. I just sat there in disbelief. The lure that had been so unstoppable for the last 2 season sat on my front deck tired and broken! (I know how to fix it but would feel bad about drilling into the old girl)
I think tonight I will have a cold Leinenkugels and retire the lure.
Thanks to Jason Schillinger I have another one to replace her with. Have any of you had to deal with loosing and old favorite?? God bless.

| Years ago, me first wife eventually did the same thing...only the outcome was much more festive!!!:O My brother hung a musky on my favorite rockfish bait(Thunder Stick) 3 yrs. ago and broke off the lip and ripped out the front hooks; daggone thing never was the same. Hopefully, your new bait will be as productive... |

Location: West Bend, WI | John, do you think that weight coming loose is a problem ? I have the same lure and I think the weight was broke from day 1 !! I have caught some musky's on it (my first) and had some follows.I don't care for the roll of the front section of the lure.I have caught fish on it so I left it alone.
Do you think that I should try to fix this problem ? What would be the best way to do this ? Drill & epoxy ? thx |

Location: Northern Illinois | We had an old black Reef Hawg that seemed to work way better than the rest. I sank very very slowly and just seemed to produce. Well, my uncle and I always have casting contests while fishing just to keep things really interesting. I think he had on a Dancin' Raider and I had on the Hawg. Both lures that can soar through the air. Well, we both released the casts laughing and my Reef Hawg just kept flying. I was like, "oh no!, troll over quickly and get that lure. I was reeling my line in which I thought snapped but my leader is what snapped and I was ticked! Never saw that lure again and haven't found one that works the way it did. And we own around 10 black hawgs. Well, someday I'll find one but that was a horrible way to retire a lure! |

| Plitzz, I really don't think the loose weight is a problem it is just that my old favorite isn't the same anymore. Probably more in my head than anything. I tried throwing it while it was riding on its side and rolling over but had zero confidence in it so that is why I think I'm going to just retire it.
As far as fixing one all a person has to do is drill a small hole, squeeze in a bunch of super glue and set the lure in a level position for the glue to dry and you should be in business. I'll try out the one I have and if that one doesn't produce I will fix my old favorite. God bless.
Man I miss my lure!

| Wow I have a fav field mouse top raider only its grey and white and it had a great sounding plop and caught fish,,however I got talked into going night fishing on LOTW and smacked it off a rock and it too loosened the weight,,,This past winter I drilled a hole in the top and squirted 2 tubes of crazy glue into it and then let it sit level overnite,,,I havent casted it yet but I have shaken it so hard a bunch of times and the weight is solid in place |
