Just looking for some input on Hummingbird sonar/gps, want to update to get side and down imaging. Not up to date on all the newer models out there, just want to know what everybody's thoughts are, and what they're running. I was looking at the 899ci HDSI combo which looks to be a decent deal since they have the new Helix out. Thanks!

The 899 uses a "compact " transducer ( cheaper to buy, less range, and less presumed resolution) the 999 and 1199, and 898,998,1198, Onix all use the HD transducer. Not sure about helix, but would bet the 5 and 7" use the compact ducer and the 9-12 " used the hd. Based off the fact the hd ducer costs 300msrp.

Don't take my word as absolute but: I've been checking the Helix models out and I've "seen on the Internet" that if you purchase a unit with the compact transducer you can swap it with Humminbird for an HD for about $90.00. But it has to be in its unopened package. I've seen that mentioned in more than one place. If I decide on the 5 I'm going to call them and find out for sure.

I know hb has a pamphlet in there sonar box that says stuff like that if you need a through hull 2d or trolling motor 2d ducer they will exchange them for only the difference of cost, never saw that in my 999box but I guess it had the best available ducer.

I exchanged my unopened transducers and paid difference.
