Any other color than black for surface lures?

Seems when ever anyone asks a question about what color to buy a particular surface lure in the response is predominantly black. Why is it black, especially if you are fishing it in low light or at dark? Are any other colors really worth buying or should my tackle box be full of only black surface lures? Thanks.

Ive heard that the black has a bigger siluette then the other colors. I have some silver and fire tiger colors but I almost never use them. I have like 10 topwater lures that are basically all black. One thing I do like is on tail spinning topwaters like the topraider. I like to have the blade that spins be like an orange or green or red. Just my opinion though.

Seeing as how a bait fades from view as a fish opens it's mouth to take the bait, I personally think any color, especially at night, will work. The sound/vibration/action is most important to me. Black is an excellent color, but there is a dude here that nails rockfish on a strawberry pattern top water bait at night, and he catches more on that certain bait than on any other, regardless of color. I personally buy a variety of baits because they look good to ME, even though they may not be the best pattern; pretty neat when someone looks over and says "cool looking bait dude"...and you look at it and say "thanks dude!"

Black is by far my favorite topwater color. It gives off a silhouette against the sky thus making it easier for the musky to see it.With that said,I have caught muskies on orange, yellow,(especially good when the ducklings are starting to swim),bumble bee,and white.Black is my #1 choice but I do like to change things up,especially on pressured water.

For topwater, I don't think color really matters, IME. Though I've never caught a musky. When you're underwater and you look up out of the water, at an object on the surface, color is almost unnoticable because of the lighting differences. Now, being that fish are built to be under water creatures, they may have better water to surface color vision, but i still can't imagine much better. I'd say it's almost 75%+ the presentation of the lure in topwater.

I'm into striped or spotted ones myself, but still throw alot of black.
Stripes that run down to the belly or all the way around are what I like. I think that the contrast is easier for them to see in a variety of conditions.
Check out the attachment of some of the new Beaverturds that I made and you'll see what I mean.

The majority of my topwaters are black or black/orange. This year I tried throwing a viper firetiger colored bait during the daytime and raised some nice fish. Also a few weeks ago on Buchers television show, I saw him using the topraider in bullfrog (yellow bottom, with a hint of green, and black topped!!). With that lure he boated a nice 43+inch fish, and a very big largemouth. Well, I never had bought the topraider because of the price, and I own enough tallywackers, and similar baits from Buster tackle, all primarily black. So I decided to dish out the twenty bucks plus tax on the topraider, and in that strange bullfrog color! I think I'll stick to black!

Next stop to Smokey's for that so called prized pacemaker that Ty engineered. Possibly in the orange or green pattern. How about white!

beav, looking good! Where did you get the brass colored flaptail blades? I can only find nickel colored ones.

I've caught on redhead and shad colored surface lures as well (tennessee shad poe's giant jackpot and 7" redhead suick fished on the surface with the tail bent upwards)

Andy,
Always have some variety! I know the idea is that black is an easier target to see againt the light "sky" background, and black is a great color in every type of lure. We all have black lures (bucktails, crankbaits, jerkbaits, topwaters and jigs) but I think the action of the lure, built in or what you give it, dictates the bite. I like a topwater that I can see, so I can make sure the lure is doing what I want. There will be days that a Firetiger or Bullfrog pattern out fishes Black, I also like a white, yellow and orange.

I would focus more on the action, bouyancy and sound of a lure, not the color.

Hey Nick, i bought a Bullfrog TopRaider last year late in the season {september} I got a nice approx 40" within 15 minutes of using the lure. Had to cut the hooks out though and didn't get to use it again. Looking forward using it this season.

I think shad type colers on top are great to, get some huge bass while your at it.
