| Do you have experience with the Esox? Not product bashing here...TFO has great products at even better prices with one of the best warranties out there! I started with the esox and it casts like a dream!! My only complaint was the amount of backbone for fighting fish. Even low 30s bent it to the cork and forced me to over play fish. I absolutely loved the handle design and wish they would revisit taper speed!! The reddington predator is a great, reasonably priced bullet proof stick. The Gloomis long handle predator pro 4x is another great option with a similar handle design. Its newer and may be tough to find used. Lots of good used stuff out there!! Good Luck! |

Location: Sussex, NJ | No experience with the TFO, but I've heard nothing but great things. This is good to know though did you have the 10wt or 12wt? I have an 8'3" predator right now actually and it's a sweet stick but it's too short for me and sometimes struggles with 12-16" flies |

| Ben, what line setup are you using when fishing that bigger stuff. I really like the Rio Outbound short, but its only made up to a 10 wt at 425g. Making your own? Looking at that predator long handle 425-475. I use an NRX 10 wt for floating line which is a dream but once you start using intermediate and full sinking lines and a mop fly it gets pretty weak. |

| The esox I had was labeled in 400-500gr I believe. I use SA wet-tip express in 450 and 550. I've been hoarding 550!(if you have any leads lemme know!) The beauty of the 550 is cutting it back to your specific situation. I currently have one for medium/large flies and one for giant flies. I throw it on a reddington pred 11wt and can literally throw about anything with it(and I'm not a great fly caster by any means!!) If I can't throw it on that it requires two hands!! Blind casting huge bugs all day is a sure fire ticket to elbow surgery!! Those rods Robert Hawkins designed are amazing!! I can throw 20" triples all day with little or no pain!! Probably only a late fall lake thing. Starting to get close to gray area between fly fishing and something else!! Still feels like fly casting with that magical feeling of shooting line though:D Robert's rods are two handed fly rods built on a TFO surfcasting blank. Its a 9 footer rated for 2 oz.(I think)

| All the credit for this set-up goes to Gabe Schubert and the guys at Bob Mitchell's FS. I struggled trying to figure something out! As soon as I got with those guys it was like I struck a magic tuning fork! I haven't looked back since! The point is...it seems like once you get it right you just know! I feel like anybody could cast this set-up!
