| Anyone out there have a good recommendation on a set of walkies that work well over long ranges on the water? We fish lake of the woods and have had trouble in the past contacting our other boat. The ones we currently use say they are good up to 35 miles...but that is far from true. We are usually within 10miles of one another and there are many times we can't connect. Just wondering if someone else has a brand they've had success with? Thanks for the help.

Location: Contrarian Island | that is not surprising... while you are on water there are lots of obstructions (islands/trees/rock) that get in the signals way... 5 miles is a realistic distance a marine band radio or the best handheld will get ... 10 miles... good luck! a marine band radio with a tall antenna is going to give you the longest distance.... |

Location: Alex or Alek? | Marine band will be the only one that will work and still that is hit or miss. My old man has one on his boat with a 8 foot antenna and he can reach crane lake from namakan which is about 15 miles. |

Location: oswego, il | To answer the question, your better off with a marine radio and an antenna. Granted we are on lake Michigan where reception is better but you get what you pay for. |

| My company paid $75.00 to rent me a sat phone for a week last July and I found my regular Verizon phone worked better. Maybe I had no reception in the cabin, but sat phones don't work inside either. |
