My fathers' buddy is an experienced rod builder and is planning on building a custom muskie rod, for my B'day plus pre-grad present. It was going to be a surprise by my parents, but Steve the builder, told them he needed to know exactly what I needed out of the rod he was going to produce.

I contacted him and he explained to me that he needs specific rod info, considering the weight, tip, and butt and handle lengths. He also told me to look for model numbers on rods in stores that might do the job. The blank he will probably, most likly use is a sage. At least that is what he told me he wanted to use.

Now with this info what do all you muskie nuts with experience in custom rod building think I should do? The G-Loomis "X" rod seems to have a great blank, but with the rod I will plan on tossing larger baits, like reef hawgs, dead heads, jakes, 10" weighted suicks, punishers, and so on. The other blank that might fit the bill is the Lamiglas x-heavy jerkbait rod, think it runs 2-10 oz. lures. Lami's seem toooo heavy of a blank for a custom rod though, and I'm tired of running St. Croix's all day throwing a deadhead or jackpot. Working these types of baits for ten hours can kill your aching back!

I really could use a Diamondback type rod weight, what do you all think? I would appreciate any suggestions on custom rods, including info on sage blanks. -Thank you.

I don't have any custom rods but I do own G-Loomis and St. Croix. My Dad has 3 custom rods all G-Loomis rod blanks. One for throwing big baits. It's a beautiful rod and it is extremely light as well. If I get the chance I'll remind my Dad when he goes up to our cabin to get the numbers off of it to possibly help.
