Was out this last weekend and had problems with reels icing up big time. The eyelids freezing up isn't much of a problem as it only takes a few seconds to clear the ice but reels are my main concern. I've read of using windshield washer fluid and also having a propane heater in the boat but was wondering if anyone else had any methods of keeping the reels from locking up from ice.

I'm making a trip up north for Thanksgiving and plan on bringing a heater just to stay warm in the boat and thaw out gear. Don't have much interest in trolling and don't have the right engine for it anyways.

I use windshield de-icer that is in a spray can. You can spray it on anything that might have froze up on you over the day.

Location: NE Ohio		i use suffix 832 braid, doesn't hold the water like other braids, must be the gore fibers maybe?

Location: Pewaukee, WI		Spider wire Stealth is another good braid option that will not hold water. No spray back with that stuff.

Location: oswego, il		Wire levelwinds like on the old garcias dont shed as much water off the line like the round or oval hole levelwjndsdo.two things to watch, ice on the sides of the levelwind once it builds you can break it. Second, putting down the reel, the spool will freeze. I keep a reel in my pocket to keep it thawed and swap them as needed.

Location: oswego, il		Temperature is another thing to consider.28-32 degrees and your reels ice up slow. You have to chip away but its not too bad. 25-27 the water that peels off the levelwind freezes instantly and builds fast. Below 25 it is very hard to maintain an ice free reels for any length of time. If you do catch a fish your spool will freeze before you pick it up to use it again.

I've also noticed that reels that have the worm gear exposed on the bottom will resist freezing a tad longer. The ones where the opening to the worm gear faces forward get the water shooting right in and no easy escape route. All time best reel for cold weather resistance is believe it or not Abu Garcia C3.

Location: Loves Park, IL		This was the first year I used PAM on my reel. It worked great. I also sprayed the shaft of my trolling motor with PAM and it never even started to freeze when stowed.
