Subject: 2 battery set-up Q for Al Warner or any others 'in the know'


Want to try the idea of connecting my two 12V's in parallel fashion.

One is a cranking battery used for starting the outboard, the other is a deep cycle for all the other electronic systems.

Can these two types of batteries be connected without causing any problems?

Hi- They can be connected together to charge them, either with the alternator on your boat motor (there are switch kit's that will allow you to do this) or via an external charger...........

However,  I would not recommend using the starting battery in parallel to increase your trolling motor runtime, i.e, you could discharge the starting battery to a point where you can't start the boat motor- as Martha says- "it's not a good thing".

If you want more runtime for the trolling motor, you're better off getting a third battery or a new larger battery for the trolling motor.

I agree with the above post. It's OK to charge them with the motor (charge them seperately with the charger though) but DO NOT use your cranking battery in parallel to operate your electronics or trolling motor.

This could actually damage your cranking battery, as it is designed to provide hi amps in short bursts unlike your deep cycle which provides low amps over longer periods of time.
