I have come down to the rod and the line. I have been looking at the orvis 10 wt and the temple fork esox rod. Any other suggestions on fly rods in the price range of 200-400$? Was also looking at the Rio pike musky line. Any other line top that? Thanks for the help

Rio makes great line, you won't find anything better. If you want a great rod that won't break the bank check out the Three Forks rods at Cabelas, very comparable to the higher end rods for under $100

I've used St. Croix's Imperial 10 weight, goes for $240-270. Casts moderate sized to big sized flies very well.
For line I've had good luck with SA, sink tip in 400 grain. A better (and more expensive) choice would be Airflo 40+ in a sink tip. I'd take Rio over SA but not over Airflo.

Reddington predator is a great rod in that price range.

The Orvis Clearwater (big game) 10wt is an awesome rod for the money.

Don't forget about going to "that" auction site. After some home miss-haps I looked for and found a few really nice 9 wt Sages, used, one barely, for $200 ea. and shipped!

I found a Sage Sp 9wt like new and an RPLXi 9wt that barely was used. Nice and cheap.

Probably the best bang for the buck musky rod ever made was the Beulah 10/11wt rod. It's biggest downside was definitely the weight of the rod, but it can throw almost anything that you could dream up. They're now discontinued, but if you can find a used one on an auction site or elsewhere you would be doing yourself a big time favor by buying one.

Another note about the TFO Esox rods, which are pretty decent sticks overall is that I would avoid the 300-400 grain and pick up a 400-500 gr rod instead. The 300-400 just doesn't handle big enough flies to be a full time musky rod. Good rod for throwing pike flies though.
