Well, I upgraded my electronics to Lowrance HDS Gen 2 and Gen 3 Touch units.  With that upgrade, I had to say goodbye to my LakeMaster mapping chips.

Started researching my options... and gotta say.... the mapping chip situation is "off the charts" so to speak.  Holy confusing.  Nothing is compatible anymore... and the varying degrees of accuracy and detail are rather frustrating.

So, those of you that have been running these units in WI, MN, and Ontario.... what have you found to be the best option in regard to a Map Chip?  I'm leaning towards just playing it safe with the Navionics Premium Hotmap North chip.... but feel that I'd be missing out on something "better".  What have you guys found to be the best option?

Thanks for your input.

I just went with Bird's and can't find a good one for Eagle Lake. I love my Lake Master chips for Wisconsin but Canada is very hard.

Navionics premium should suit you fine.

Navionics +. Or navionics update if you had a prior premium or gold card. The plus gives you the option to load any map in us or canada on 1 card. I have all my pa, ohio, ny, ontario, ky maps on 1 card

I'm very happy with the Lowrance Lake Insight chips. From Lake Minnetonka to Mille Lacs to Lake of the Woods, I'm very pleased. Every bit as good as the last made Lowrance Lakemaster chip. And it covers all of MN and Wisconsin, Rainy, LOW, and more.

I would highly rec. the Navionics + with the High Def SonarCharts layer, Premium only has Nautical charts which lacks the detail of SonarCharts layer. It is a map card that comes preloaded with Nautical Charts layer you download the high Def SonarCharts layer of the areas you fish. One card will cover all of US and Canada. If you have your units networked together via ethernet you can share the map card between units. You also can do depth contour highlighting with Navionics.

You can preview mapping on the Navionics Web App all of Navionics mapping is on the web app preview. After you zoom in click on the sonar icon on the lower left corner fro the high def SonarCharts layer available on Nav +

I agree on the Insight chip.

Also the Navionics + chip is good if you fish more remote Canadian waters.

Another vote for the Lowrance Insight chip. For the lakes I fish in Western Minnesota the contour lines are exactly the same as the old Lowrance-compatible Lakemaster chips.

Insight pro 2012 works in my gen 1. I've heard the newer versions don't work with gen 1, but never tried it.

The Navionics + with the option to download any new areas I fish has been working out really well for me this year

have gen2 and 3 on my boat also. check out insight genesis. I started using it this year for smaller lakes without maps. just record your sonar logs on the water and upload it when you get home. love it.
