Time to rally the troops, OCTOBER 29TH from 6 – 8 pm PLEASE take the time to attend the walleye/musky MN DNR meeting at the Otter Tail Power Community Room in Fergus Falls MN. The address is 215 South Cascade Street. The Pelican Lakes Association is aggressively promoting participation of all fishermen and non-fishermen alike against musky stocking to attend and voice their concerns regarding, “physical injuries caused by large muskies.” We know this is complete nonsense, but Senator Ingebrigtsen and Representative Bud Nornes need to hear it from us Thursday October 29th, be there!

My goal at this meeting is to have a show of numbers larger than those trying to falsely express muskies being detrimental to walleye populations or public safety. The meeting room has been reserved from 5 to 8 pm so if you are able to show up earlier that would be great. Bring posters to protest. Tell your friends to be present. Our voices matter. It is of the utmost importance we unite against the termination of musky stocking in Otter Tail County Lakes or the Pelican Lakes Association will be granted their slanderous plea. I know I sure love having musky lakes in my back yard and do not want to lose them so if you like fishing muskies in Central and Northwestern Minnesota as I do, let’s get out and show our strength in numbers.

Thank you,
Katee Campion

We need to organize a car pool from various locations, Thursday is good that gives you all week to remind people to be there. Usually these things start at 7pm at least the ones I've been to,,,any chance we could get that extra hour I think it would matter in the turnout by traveling muskie guys.

Dave,

Being in WI, I'm unable to make the meeting, but I would be highly interested in contacting any Senators/Reps/etc. to let them know my opinion. Also, are there any business owners/chamber of commerces people could contact to let know how much time/money that people have spent in those areas, solely because of the musky fishing opportunities?

Please let myself and others know about the above.

Thanks for getting this out there, Jake Bucki

I love that somehow people on Pelican Lake are getting attacked by muskies, but I can't think of the last time I heard of someone getting attacked on the many metro lakes that are stocked.

So there are six reports of muskies biting people from 1983-2014. One of those reports a 7' muskie! 8 reports of people being afraid of muskies because they thought one might have ate a loon or a duck and they have teeth. Bass and pike eat ducks, pike have teeth. I am sure there are more reports of pike bites to bring to the meeting. I remember my cousin swimming in Minnesota's woman lake when a perch bite off a tiny scab on his leg. Savage beasts!

I got bitten in the nips by bluegill on Pelican in august. Can we also get rid of them, too?

wish i could make it, hope some of yous guys can. these people have the "i've already made up my decision so dont confuse me with the facts" mindset. We wont ever win them over or convince any of them. We just have to hope the state doesn't listen to em.

Make no mistake guys if we do not get a big turnout for this meeting we will lose these fisheries forever, which is complete joke because West Battle Lake was the first lake every stocked in the state of Minnesota, back in 1963. And believe Senator Ingebritsen is no friend of Muskies or Muskie Fishermen, he is actually the guy that wrote the bill that got Muskie Lakes opened up to spearing for the Dark House Association, and believe me he will not stop with these lakes he will come after each and every lake in the State of MN, because in his mind Muskies are a garbage fish and spearer's should be able to harvest them because what is the point of having a fish in a lake that you cannot harvest....

So please write him with you concerns but please be polite, we do not need to make a bigger enemy out of him than he already is, what we need to do is find a way to vote him out of office.

I won’t be able to make it, but someone make sure to mention that Lake Harriet, Lake Calhoun, Lake of the Isle, and Cedar Lake all have muskies and are probably the busiest lakes in Minneapolis for beach goers. Add on top of that all of the of the lakes in the metro that also have heavy beach traffic in the summer, and yet I’m not aware of a single attack. Heck I fish for tigers on a small metro lake bordered on one side by a small college that people swim across on a regular basis.

Do yourselves a favor and avoid reading the "horror" stories. I have saved you the time by preparing the Cliffs Notes. Ch. 1 - A lady bumps into a Zebra Mussel and cuts her leg. Ch. 2 - A now traumatized rescue yorkie was "playing" with a brood of wild ducks, and "almost" got eaten. Ch. 3 - A terrible parent scares the $h** out of her kids by telling them a big fish "probably" made the prop scar on the dead northern...they no longer want to swim. Ch. 4 - Some guy used to be able to harvest 150 walleyes each season and can no longer find tulibee to spear or net. Ch. 5 - Some guy "assumes" a muskie ate a baby loon. Ch. 6 - A poor lady didn't have enough room in her yard to bury a 48" muskie that washed ashore. Ch. 7 - The story climaxes with an 84" muskie attacking a girl in Wisconsin, 33 years ago. She "barely" escapes with minor scratches. It's an epic story, littered with sightings of monsters and the ever looming "possibility" that a child will be traumatized at the sight of one.

All jokes aside, this is a serious matter and I will be writing to both representatives in support of continued stocking (I would be there if wasn't travelling that week), but we're up against some pretty compelling arguments.

Can you really win this by bringing numbers to a meeting? The elected officials are showing up because the opposition has their ear and has likely been working them over for several weeks with a false information propaganda campaign. Assuming that's correct, who can the muskie community put up as their face with a clear consistent message? How can that person get access to the elected officials prior to the meeting to do the real work that needs to be done - education with real unemotional, objective information, available from the experts? Trying to do that in a big room filled with emotionally charged people who have formed an opinion on ridiculous perceptions is going to be tough to come out with a win.

Here is a thought guys, we are going to need at least 200 people to show up to this event to make our point loud and clear, and another thought is each every one of us should bring a $100 bill and when we are talking with Bill Ingerbritsen we should all hold up our $100 bills and let him know that all of the money $20,000 plus will go the coffers of his competition in the next election, unless he keeps his nose out of the DNR's Business. I mean the guy is the biggest hypocrite on the planet. this is a guy that hates Muskies because they are not native to some of these lakes, but always has his Pheasants forever sticker on the back of his truck, what does this moron think they flew here from China?

Quick question, how or why did West Battle get in the mix? I've been following the Pelican issue, but first I heard of Battle. This question was also sent to Bill. Also, I would assume DNR folks will be there to provide technical assistance to some of these ridiculous claims/anti-musky views?!?!

What Joe, luke chinewalker said is very important. Don't need 200 people yelling. Need a collective voice. I wish our one collective voice would get involved lime the nra does but they won't. There are plenty of arguments to overcome their lack of substance. It is as if we need a separate organization to combat these people.

There's no advantage to NOT showing up!!!
There's going to be some local media there, and some people who are on the fence just to gauge the whole issue. How does a lack of turnout send any type of positive input.
The muskie people that come to these things do not shout, stomp, point fingers if you have been to these things you know that. The antis will be there and people will be allowed to speak, having more then just a couple muskie guys there to keep defending things doesn't make us look like the insignificant 1% that these people are trying to portray.

If the problem is that muskies are depleting the walleye population, which is the first complaint that is mentioned.
(not sure there is any evidence here)

I would like to suggest that we as a group should donate funds to walleye stocking in Pelican Lake as a civil way to say we care about the fishery as a whole

thanks

reading some of the views gets a little disappointing, We have to many people that love to fish our great lakes here in MN but when it comes to standing up and fighting to keep them they think that there will be someone else there to do the fighting for them. Please Note: if it was a simple as the DNR telling this guy that he is a moron and giving him the facts then this issue would of been over from the beginning of it almost 2 years ago. But please keep in mind this guy has Millions of dollars and hates to lose, so he has the politicians in his back pocket, bought and paid for. So unless we get a big turnout to this meeting our argument and our influence as muskie fisherman means nothing, and we will lose these fisheries. This has been going on for like I said for nearly two years and this is the meeting that will decide the future of these lakes. So I do not want to hear moaning and crying if we lose them, when many of you are counting on other people to do the fighting for you.

Because how this works when Politicians get involved is that if they are paid enough by this guy and don't see the support from us, they will right a Bull #*#* bill tied in with another Bill and bring it to the Governor's desk, he will sign it because who reads entire Bill's now days ( Obama Care) and oops there we go we no longer have these fisheries...

I hear you Dave, but I'm not hearing anyone saying "I'm not coming cause it's no big deal, I'll let someone else handle it". I see 5 definites, with offers to car pool, and Agee that can't because they're quite always away or travelling for work. I myself will be there if I can, but I'm guessing like a lot of others I just don't make a big deal out of announcing it.

If we lose this one it seems obvious that Miltona goes next??? Just the next county over and the antis were for a while successful in getting stocking reduced.

I think you guys should try to get some big name tv personality type of fishermen to show up at this meeting and say a few words. If say Al Lindner or Gary Parsons , or Pete Maina, or Kieth Kavajecz or however you spell his name were to get up there and say a few words, im sure that everyone would listen to them. What would happen if a big name walleye guy got up there and talked about how the musky have no impact on the walleye population?????

But please keep in mind this guy has Millions of dollars and hates to lose, so he has the politicians in his back pocket, bought and paid for. So unless we get a big turnout to this meeting our argument and our influence as muskie fisherman means nothing, and we will lose these fisheries.

Is this the guy who has that multi-million dollar super mansion on the lake by chance?

No. Barry has a fishing boat, but it gets launched in the spring and stays on the lift till fall. I really doubt this issue concerns him at all.

Anyone willing to bring a go pro and record this meeting and post the outcome for those of us out of state folks? This is something we all have to deal with in every state. Anything that could help us develop a uniform front.

Dave W, I know you've guided Pete multiple times up in that neck of the woods. Maybe ask him if he and Kavajetz or Parsons can come. Make it part of their show maybe. Or I'll ask him, last time we had a little deal over here Pete was very vocal with the politicians.

So this millionaire genius, who if I am not mistaken made all his money in ND, does realize that even if he wins by the time all the current muskies in Pelican die off he will also be dead. Or hasn't he thought it that far through??

I was involved about 12 years ago when an individual and a group tried to stop stocking in lake Miltona and elsewhere.

Had I and others not gotten involved, Miltona would not have many muskies left in it as stocking would've stopped in 2002.

It is a mistake to think that any amount of reasoning at this point with the individual and some of the members of the Pelican lake association will have any results. This is beyond that point.

The biggest impact will be letters, emails, phone calls and most importantly showing up at the meeting on the 29th. It is extremely important that anyone who can make the 29th meeting do so. I am cutting short a fishing trip to Canada to attend the meeting. Yes, it is that important.

Also, if a lake association can dictate fisheries policy and they happen to get stocking stopped in Ottertail county a pattern has been set and it will soon spill statewide. Much is at stake with this meeting.

Please call again. Please write. Most of all please attend the meeting.

Ande is 100% Correct, If we do not get a huge turnout and win this battle this could determine the future for all Muskie Lakes in Minnesota... Believe me you will have lake Associations coming after Minnetonka, Alexander, Mille Lacs, and we can completely forget about any new lakes getting stocked.... It is my Birthday on the 29th and had big plans with family and friends that I am going to set aside to be at this meeting. So if it means taking a vacation day at work for some of you guys to make it there then I would do it, because if you are serious about fishing for Muskies in this State, this is the battle we cannot lose...

funny you say alexander because there is a couple that live on the lake that have told me to kill every muskie in the lake and that they are trying to petition the dnr to remove the fish from the lake all together

Sadly after more than a dozen years of various board member and fund raising positions in two chapters as well as some committee work at International....the lack of leadership from MI on issues like this one really give me heartburn, causing me to throw in the towel. We should not be the ad hoc group of voices trying to compete with organized people led by a unified voice. This should be the opposite if we had good leadership that could organize us, represent us, and most importantly work this to its end well before a meeting like this one coming up where clearly decisions have already been made. They are just going through the motions because they have to. At this point, I think the only voice that will matter is one that comes with credibility that cannot be challenged by either party. That is not a muskie person. IMO...it is a well known walleye professional who can tell these uneducated people they just are not adapting to the changes in the fishery and prove the fish are still there and can be caught. Have him bring a weigh-in bag full of fish he caught right before the meeting and tell them how he caught them.

The issue has very little to do with actual walleye fishing. Bringing a walleye angler in would really do nothing. The walleye "issue" is just a facade. If you've followed the progression of this fight against muskies it's gone from muskies are AIS (laughable), muskies are eating the walleye (not supported by fisheries data), to public safety for the grandkids on the dock. This "issue" is really about one thing, and one thing only. Use of the lake.

Your ideas of stronger, more organized leadership would be great. But I don't know that it would stop these "issues".

Pointer I think you are absolutely correct about the issue being the use of the lake not the fact there are muskie in the lake. Now, if they could just figure out how to keep all those North Dakota people in North Dakota on the weekends they could have their lake all to themselves.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying that, but I think that is the mentality of the ones that want to stop muskie stocking. They don't like muskie anglers using THEIR lake early in the AM or late into the night.

No I hear you. We do get a bad rep, and don't get me wrong their are plenty of "nodaks" that vacation in that area. But I wouldn't be surprised that a lot of the cabin owners that don't want muskies are from Fargo. I'll be making my first Fargo chapter muskies inc meeting this next Monday and am guessing the meeting will be a topic. If not I will be rallying the troops.

"EDIT" I'm a transplant from the cities area. So many jobs up here. Just no close muskie lakes

That might be the truest thing ever written on the subject. Bottom line is lakefront property owners think they entitled to own the actual water (and control who uses it and what swims in it). There are deep historical reasons why in the US this is not the case and it seems to be under attack more every year.

Using the term Invasive Species qualifies the Muskie Problem as an Issue should be dealt will by a lake association.

Decreasing, eliminating or eradicating an invasive species is one of the criteria to obtain "Star Lake" designation

I'll be heading up there next Thursday from the west metro. Haven't decided if I'm bringing the boat yet, but if people need rides I can leave the boat at home and haul folks up there. (Alternatively, if people have empty seats they are looking to fill I could hop in with someone, no sense in everyone driving up there separately.)

Anyone wanting to follow up from Alex or carpool, we'll be leaving Rudy's Red Eye/Alexandria Holiday Inn parking lot right off 94 at 3:30 10/29.  There is also a bus leaving from Thorne Bros at 2pm.
Questions feel free to email me, [email protected]
Below is a well written synopsis of the reality of this situation  Please read.
Thanks, Katee
Muskie management in Minnesota is under attack. Without your support our muskie fisheries are in jeopardy. This threat began with a small group of muskie haters on Pelican Lake (one of MN's premier muskie waters). By promoting false information through their lakeshore owners association, they were able to convince the Ottertail County COLA to take action against muskie stocking in Ottertail County. They've gone to great lengths to manipulate local residents into believing muskies are destroying their lakes, and they've gained enough traction to pull the statewide MN Coalition of Lake Associations into the fray as well. Their claims are nothing new. It's the same old story.... "Muskies are eating all the walleyes." Then, when the science proves that completely false, it's "Muskies are eating all the panfish." And when that is also proven false they turn to "Muskies are a threat to public safety and will attack our children." Obviously that doesn't hold water either. In fact, this is nothing more than a re-hashed version of previous efforts by the group "No More Muskies", but they've found a new face and a new voice. There are decades worth of science supporting muskie stocking and proving it has had no negative effects anywhere in Minnesota, but actual facts are not something these people concern themselves with. They use scare tactics and emotional pleas to further their cause.Make no mistake, this threat is serious.
In fact, they have allies in the Minnesota Legislature. Senator Bill Ingebrigtsen has long been opposed to muskies, and in the past has made several attempts to hamper positive muskie management. Senator Ingebrigtsen has aligned himself with this current group and is working to help them stop muskie stocking in Ottertail County. Representative Bud Nornes has joined in as well. Many Legislators see this as a "social" issue and not a biological one, meaning they don't care about the science. If there is enough public outcry against muskie stocking, they can and will write legislation to stop it regardless of the actual facts The groups' current goal is to stop muskie stocking on West Battle, Pelican, and Big Detroit Lakes. These are three of Minnesota's premier trophy muskie waters, in addition to being thriving fisheries for walleyes and panfish. They also intend to stop any possibility of stocking any additional waters in Ottertail County in the future. What must be understood is that this is just the start. This threat goes far beyond Ottertail County. Any traction they gain will be used to promote this same type of action across the state. If this isn't stopped dead in it's tracks it will have serious implications for every muskie water in Minnesota.
The only way to stop this is with your support.
This is not the time to be complacent. We need EVERYONE who cares about muskies  anywhere in Minnesota to take action. There is a meeting being held on Thursday, October 29th in Fergus Falls at the Otter Tail Power Community Room. 215 South Cascade Street. The meeting is from 6:00-8:00 pm. It is extremely important that we have a very strong presence of muskie supporters at this meeting. The Pelican Lakes association is aggressively promoting attendance by anyone opposed to muskies. We need to show them, the DNR, and the Legislators that we support muskies.  Please pass this information on, and ask everyone who can to attend the meeting. Lastly, please call and/or email the two involved Legislators, as well as the DNR Commissioner, letting them know you support muskie stocking, and proactive muskie management statewide. As always, be polite and courteous. We win these battles because we take the high road and stick to science, facts, and common sense.
Tom Landwehr (DNR Commissioner)

Senator Bill Ingebrigtsen

Representative Bud Nornes

Please make those phone calls, send the e-mails, and try to attend the meeting! Thank you.

I'm 250 miles away, so emails sent. I hate to think that one small group of wealthy individuals thinks they can decide what happens with a body of public water. If they suceed, it will no doubt set a dangerous precident. Thank you to all who live closer that are taking the time represent us there!

If they checked the statistics of muskie attacks versus drowning, they shouldn't let there kids swim anyways. Keep them away from the water. Period. I'm guessing there kid is probably infinitely more likely to drown rather than be attacked by a muskie.

Muskies Inc will be at the meeting in full force has usual????
The best way to handle this is let the local chapters deal with it they are going to be the most familiar with problem and have the best connections.
The Vikingland and fargo Moorhead chapters are some of the first chapters ever organised and with very intelligent, active, passionate people,,,couldn't be in better hands.

4 children have died in MN since 2008 due to that Amoeba in the water. Drownings not related to boating account for 26 to 50 deaths annually as well during that timeframe. THEN we add n Musky attacks into the fray and we have exactly 2 reported attacks where muskies (possibly pike?) have bitten someone. One was in 1995 on Lake Rebecca while the other was in 2010 on Lake Calhoun.
So these clowns are worried about the docile musky sitting under their dock, but aren't concerned with something else that is killing people on an alarming rate? They are more worried about a bite than someone who might end up dead due to drowning?
Yep, makes complete sense.

I see the focus for these groups from here on out is the Muskie's are an invasive species to their lake and therefore must be eliminated.

so the DNR is intentionally stocking an Invasive Species into Minnesota Lakes?

Where is the Logic there?

What these moron's from these lake associations do not realize is that Walleye's have been stocked in many of these lakes and are not natural to some of them, and will no to very little natural reproduction of walleyes on some lakes like Miltona the population of catchable walleyes would not exist. Really what this is about is lake usage, the rich people want the lake to themselves and don't want other to be able to fish on THEIR lake. When this meeting was originally set up the time was set for 10am, knowing that no one that works for a living and supports Muskie stockings would be able to make it to the meeting....So now that the times are better for people to make it there, we as muskie angler's need to step up to plate and do our part and make it there....

I'm not a resident of MN but fish there a lot and when I do it's mostly muskie fishing. This appears to have potential as a state wide issue as to who will control the use of these public waters. Is it to early for MN residents to contact their local reps & state senators and voice their concerns over what is afoot over the use of these public lakes?

Does anybody have any valid numbers on how much money muskie fishing brings to the State Economy and Tourism? That kind of information makes Senators and Representatives take notice. Money talks and if we can show how much money muskies bring to the state coffers we've won the war.

@Johnnysled. Yes, I mean the economic impact that muskie fishing brings from guys that sleep in their trucks and pack sandwiches. They still pay sales tax on gas for their trucks and boats, sales tax on bread, mayo, and ham too. Sure, that's small potatoes but it all adds up when you factor in how many guys fish muskies and spend money on fishing muskies; lures, boats, gas, lodging, licenses, food, trailers, tires, booze, it all adds up to big money spent by muskie fishermen every year. This also creates jobs which also pays taxes.

If we can get any kind of numbers on the economic impact of muskie fishing I think we can kill the efforts of the no more muskie people.

Fishysam spent $500 on Pelican Lake. That's a start.

The Economics

A 2006 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service report stated that recreational fishing in the United States generated $82 billion in sales, $24 billion in income, and supported 534,000 jobs.
While exact revenue amounts based on muskie fishing alone is somewhat elusive, the sport is commonly believed to have a very positive economic impact where healthy muskellunge populations exist.

Well-known boundary waters such as Lake St. Clair, the St. Lawrence River, and Lake of the Woods draw large numbers of muskie fishermen every year. Properly managed and protected areas of Minnesota such as Lake Vermillion, Lake Bemidji, and Cass Lake, as well as recent attempts to restore historical populations of the Great Lakes strain of muskellunge in Green Bay have become huge fishing success stories. Successful propagation of the resource in order to boost tourism can be found as far south as Kentucky and Tennessee, as far east as New Jersey, and as far west as Washington State. Muskie anglers commonly spend money on lodging, food and drink, vehicle fuels and additives, boat, trailer, and truck maintenance, state campground, access and launch fees, and more.

In Indiana, native muskies nearly disappeared by the 1960s. Today, with excellent propagation and management, yet with only ten lakes containing the species, Indiana has become a prime muskie destination (Jordan 2008). An Indiana Department of Natural Resources report has stated “Assuming muskie anglers spend $50 per trip (American Sportfishing Association), the economic value of muskie fishing at Loon Lake was estimated to be $29,917 in 2004. The commercial value of 1,100 fingerlings (10-in) stocked each year is estimated to be $7,700 for a benefit:cost ratio of 4:1” (Pearson 2005). At Lake Webster, Indiana, muskie anglers spent an estimated $339,147, “representing 76% of the entire program since its inception and worth more than 10 times the annual cost of stocking ($30,960)” (Pearson 2005). In Minnesota muskies have been aggressively managed as a trophy fishery. A 2005 study was performed within the state showed that muskie anglers spent an average of 45 days on the water compared to just 21 days for non-muskie anglers. The study also reported that 33 percent of the members of Muskie, Inc. (the prominent muskellunge sport fishing based organization) spend $2,000 to $4,999 on fishing expenses every year compared to only 8.6 percent of non-muskie anglers who spent monies in that range (Schroeder and Fulton 2005).

The economic impact of muskie fishing in Wisconsin is significant. In 2006, an estimated 1.4 million anglers spent $1.8 billion dollars directly on fishing within the state (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association 2006). It is estimated that 25% of anglers who fish Wisconsin specifically target muskies (Simonson 2008). That equates to $425 million dollars spent on fishing for muskies in Wisconsin in 2006 alone. Tim Simonson, fisheries biologist for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, believes that a 50” fish could be worth in upwards of $35,850 dollars per surviving stocked fish, and take up to18 years for a fish to reach that size (Simonson 2008).

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has listed 794 bodies of water within the state as containing known populations of muskellunge. In comparison to Wisconsin, Minnesota is listed as having only 111 bodies of water that contain muskie. Ironically, the previously mentioned U.S. Fish and Wildlife report states that the same amount of anglers who fished Wisconsin (1.4 million) spent an estimated $2.8 billion dollars in Minnesota – a difference of $1.1 billion. Using the same 25% of total anglers as those who target muskies, it can be assumed that $700 million was spent on muskie fishing in Minnesota in 2006 ($275 million more than Wisconsin with roughly 1/8 of the water). This analogy begs the question – Why? The answer is quite simple. The state of Minnesota, with the help of Muskies, Inc., localized clubs, and countless numbers of individuals who had a collective vision, have made the state’s muskellunge waters a more desirable place to fish. Minnesota has a more proactive management strategy that included raising the minimum size limit to 48 inches. Minnesota fish reach sexual maturity and beyond (required for natural recruitment) and maximum size potential desired by fishermen.

It would only be fair to state at this point that mature fish are what the vast majority of muskie anglers target, and they will spend many hours, fruitless days, and vast amounts of money in their pursuit. In retrospect, it has become obvious that fishermen from other states, including Wisconsin, where the muskellunge is the state fish, are leaving other muskie lakes closer to home to travel to Minnesota, remote areas of Canada with “no kill” regulations, or more specific places like Lake Webster to pursue muskies. In the case of Minnesota and Indiana, it is clearly the result of the states’ direction in muskellunge management.

The management of muskellunge, whether it has been in native waters or as a result of
introducing muskellunge in new waters of the state, has created a mystique of both a trophy
angling opportunity and concern about the potential effect of a large predator on the fish
community. Over the past 15 years interest and awareness of muskellunge angling opportunities
in Minnesota have reached new highs (Schroeder et al. 2007). This enthusiasm has brought out
more resident and non-resident anglers seeking to catch a muskellunge greater than 50 inches in
length. Online chat rooms and media reports help fuel the interest. In 2006, a video to promote
and describe muskellunge management on stocked lakes was prepared and distributed as a
cooperative venture by Muskies Inc. and Minnnesota DNR. In 2007, the DNR increased the
minimum size limit from 40 inches to 48 inches for 55 waters, a progressive approach to manage
a trophy muskellunge fishery with the use of regulations....

Management of muskellunge in Minnesota has focused on developing high quality trophy
fisheries. Younk and Pereira (2007) described trends in Minnesota’s muskellunge fishery that
included an increase in the number of 40 inch and larger fish and an increase in the proportion of
successful anglers following an increase in minimum size regulations. Angler reported catches of
50 inch and larger muskellunge have increased steadily from 1995 through 2004 with 163 such
fish reported in 2004 (Muskies Inc. data).
In a recent survey, muskellunge anglers expressed an above average satisfaction with the size
and numbers of muskellunges they have encountered (Schroeder et al. 2007), with about 80%
satisfied or very satisfied with their overall fishing experience. In contrast, they were less
satisfied with the number of muskellunge fishing opportunities. Schroeder et al. (2007) estimated
that 14% of licensed anglers target muskellunge when angling, with another 18% of nonmuskellunge
anglers moderately or very interested in fishing for muskellunge in the future. A
previous statewide survey (Schroeder and Fulton 2005) estimated that 9.3% of resident anglers in
Minnesota had fished for muskellunge in 2003; suggesting continued growth over the past four
years. These estimates corroborate other information that suggests substantial growth in the sport
of muskellunge fishing compared to previous estimates by management professionals (Wingate
1986). Creel surveys on Cass Lake (Figure 8) and Lake Bemidji confirm this growing interest:
in 1986 2.6 % of the anglers were targeting muskellunge, in 2003, 19.5% of the anglers were
targeting muskellunge.

According to Bob Mehsikomer, president of Simply Fishing Inc., the tournament and the pre-tournament fishing trips had an economic impact of $500,000 -$600,000, based on independent surveys done by their group.

Hosting a muskie tournament with a $100,000 purse is a big task for a medium-sized resort on Lake Vermilion, or even two resorts.
But Bob Airis, at Bay View Lodge, and Ed Tausk, at Vermilion Dam Resort, were full up to their gills during the Simply Fishing Muskie Classic which lasted five days in September.
“I’d like to see them come back next year,” said Airis, “These fishermen were not intrusive, they weren’t like the bass fisherman lurking around docks.”
Both Airis and Tausk said the tournament filled their resorts during a fall week that is not typically busy. And both resort owners were impressed with the tournament participants’ sense of sportsmanship and respect for the lake and other boaters.
“They really followed the rules,” said Tausk, “they slowed down coming through the narrows and the fish always stayed in the water.”
Airis also had good things to say about the muskie fishermen.
“I heard one person say they saw a tournament team coming into a spot, but when the tournament team realized some local fishermen were fishing there, they just waved, and left the area.”
Catch and Release ethics
The Simply Fishing Muskie Classic was a first for the lake. And it was a tournament that really lived up to its catch-and-release image.
“Judges had to witness the release of the live fish at the boatside,” said Tausk, “If the fish was hurt, the team would be disqualified.” Tausk added that a fall tournament date meant colder water, and better overall survival rates for the released muskies.
Airis said the number of over-50 inch muskies caught, considering the poor fishing conditions, was impressive. He said tournament organizers estimated that Vermilion was producing more large muskies than any other lake they had based the tournament on.
By basing the tournament at two locations, the organizers also spread out boat traffic at both ends of the lake. In addition, the tournament started at 7:00 a.m., so there weren’t any complaints about early morning noise.
Airis said the only problem was the low number of judging boats. The tournament requires that any fish caught be kept in the water until a judge arrives to measure it. With the size of the lake, at least 30 judges are needed to make sure that fish can be measured and released quickly.
If the tournament is to return to Vermilion next fall, more judge boats will be required. Judge boat volunteers are reimbursed for their expenses, up to $75 per day. They are also included in all tournament functions, including a special judges’ reception.
The tournament went ahead without local support from the Lake Vermilion Resort Association and the Lake Vermilion Sportmen’s Club. Airis said the reputation of other fishing tournaments, especially bass tournaments, had soured some lake residents and business owners on the idea of hosting tournaments locally.
The tournament attracted 160 fishermen, most of whom came up to the lake prior to the tournament to scope out the fishing hot spots. In addition to Bay View and Vermilion Dam, many other local resorts filled beds due to the tournament, and local marinas saw increases in gas sales and repair business due to the event.
Half a million dollars impact
According to Bob Mehsikomer, president of Simply Fishing Inc., the tournament and the pre-tournament fishing trips had an economic impact of $500,000 -$600,000, based on independent surveys done by their group.
“Right now we are negotiating to bring it back to Vermilion,” he said, “But we do have two other markets that are campaigning for it.”
Mehsikomer said they are looking for more support from local businesses and individuals who would be willing to volunteer as judge boats.
“We could use help from lots of the smaller businesses,” he said, “Not just large corporate sponsors.” This year, corporate sponsors included Gander Mountain, Ranger Boats, Shimano and Beckman Nets. Bay View Lodge and Vermilion Dam also provided financial support, he said.
“We need to get it out there that muskie guys aren’t bass guys,” he said, “They fish differently. They manage their resource. Muskie have the lowest population biomass in the system.”
Walt Moe, president of the Sportmen’s Club of Lake Vermilion, said his impression of the tournament was very positive.
“This was probably one of the best run tournaments I’ve seen,” he said, “with the least impact to the lake.” Moe said the Sportsmen’s Club would be discussing the tournament at their next meeting, but that so far, he hadn’t heard any negative comments about the tournament’s impact on the lake, the resource or local residents.
Mehsikomer said this was the first large muskie tournament they had sponsored in the last six or so years.
“This was the largest, richest muskie tournament in the history of the sport,” he said, “nothing rivals it.” The prize money, which equaled 100 percent of the entry fees, meant an $80,000 top prize. Prizes could have been as high as $200,000 depending on the number of boats entered.
The tournament will be televised, nationwide, in January, on the Sportsmen’s Channel, I-Life Network, Fox Sports and possibly TV-41 of Minneapolis.
“There could be a million viewers who see the show,” Mehsikomer said.
The decision on whether or not Vermilion will host the tournament again next year may be made as soon as later this month, when Mehsikomer travels back to Vermilion to meet with the two host resort owners and other possible sponsors.

The Impact Fishing Tourneys Have On The Local Economy

http://www.post-journal.com/page/content.detail/id/506933/The-Impac...

On the opening weekend of the 2008 muskie season, Muskie First ran what has become its annual two-day catch-and-release muskie event on Chautauqua Lake. This event is the brain child of longtime Lake Erie charter boat captain and avid muskie guide Larry Jones. Captain Larry has worked with local muskie fisherman, Chautauqua County Visitors Bureau and Chautauqua County Sports Fishing and Hunting Promotion to promote this two-day event.

The 2008 event saw 50 boats taking part in the event. As in the past the proceeds from the event went directly back into the Chautauqua Lake muskie hatchery. The monies raised from this event over the years has been spent on additional feed for the pen-raised muskie fry.

The additional feed is used to hold the muskie fry until they get to what is classified as muskie fingerlings. Studies have been conducted and common sense agrees that the larger the fish that are stocked in a given body of water the much better chance of survival they have.

With tournaments like Muskie First giving directly back to the community and the fishery, fishing on Chautauqua Lake will continue to thrive for today and the future.

"Resident and nonresident anglers generate an economic impact of nearly $2.3 billion per year in Wisconsin, according to the American Sportfishing Association."

Figure out what % of Wisconsin fishermen fish muskies and that will give some idea of how much of that 2.3 billion is generated by muskies and I think it's safe to say it would be similar for Minnesota.

This whole thing is extremely disappointing. My boat spends a couple hundred dollars a weekend almost always. Food, gas, booze, lures, line, batteries, everything. I've been fishing these lakes for 15+ years. Drunk morons driving boats way too big for them. Jet skis driving 10 feet from fishermen. Wakeboarding boats nearly capsizing the poor guys with small aluminum boats. Trash floating all over the place. And now muskies and muskie fishermen are the issue. Insane. From what I gather and hear this guy is a very dishonest person who trades in dramatics and fearmongering, who also happens to have money and free time. This small group of people might be ignorant about the issue, but they have gotten us to this point. It is important people make it to this meeting in numbers and conduct themselves in a very professional and matter-of-fact kind of way. If we go in acting like how these anti-musky folks want to portray us, we lose this fight. And then it'll be your lakes next. I hope everyone will take this seriously. We can't let this be the moment it all starts unwinding for muskies in Minnesota. And it very well could be if we don't put a stop to it immediately.

I think everyone who attends the meeting should bring their boat and fish Pelican the day after the meeting!!!! Hahaha

I suspect there will be several boats in the parking lot.

Maybe every muskie guy should go to Pelican and fish walleyes and show them all how it's done :)

That is what I am talking about ha ha. Showing support from the cities today. Cant make it because of work obligations. Thanks for all that attend the meeting. Means a lot to the musky community.

MNDNR has robust data showing there is strong scientific evidence that the way musky are managed in Minnesota poses no environmental harm to the fisheries that are in.

Meeting wrapping up.

I know I'm not everyone's favorite poster on this board, but I'd like to thank everyone that came out, wrote emails, made phone calls. It was very, very cool to see all of us here in support of our sport. Everyone kept a level head and represented our sport well.

Thanks to Muskies inc and their chapter that brought members. As well as Thornes and Happy Hooker (despite his fantastic use of the comma) for arranging the musky express.

If I'm ever rich, I'll buy you all a beer.

Sure did show up angry. A small group of us got a bit of a laugh when this guy walked into room, looked around, saw an orange musky sticker on every body in sight and says "f***ers!". This is the type that came with an extreme bias, listened to probably nothing, and left with the same opinion and will continue thinking that until the day he leaves the earth. No sense in trying to convince this type of guy. It is impossible.

I thought the meeting was good. Rob Kim's comment on our DNR being the gold standard across North America was fantastic. Pretty easy to pick up a news paper or go online and find alot of DNR bashing. I was very impressed with the DNR tonight. They have a plan and as long as they can and manage to execute the plan, all of us will be winners. If I came away with anything gained tonight, it was a strengthened confidence in the MNDNR and not just related to muskies. They are some smart people doing very tough jobs and I am now more appreciative of that!

Awesome turnout. The small opposition did a really great job of proving their ignorance. I couldn't believe how little homework they did before coming. The worst was the excuses that it was "poorly attended" because of time of year. Basically saying we are a bunch of astroturfers. David was the one that called for this meeting at this time. It was pretty obvious how little support this man has in his crusade against muskies. Thanks for coming in from all over for this everyone.

Huge thank you to the hundred plus musky folks that showed up for the meeting in Fergus tonight! It was a great success and show of unity. The DNR did an awesome job with facts supporting the musky program. The next step is to contact your own state representatives in support of musky stalking state wide and express muskies do not harm our fisheries.

@bigfoot

Someone correct me if I'm wrong because I was in the back and didn't hear everything, but as far as where we go from here nothing really is settled and chipped in stone. Near as I understand, the Pelican Lake Assoc. has filed an injunction to stop muskie stocking for this fall. That is before a Judge right now and the D.N.R. cannot comment on litigation to which they're a party to. So we're in a holding pattern about that until the Judge rules.

One comment I heard from someone on the Panel was that whatever happens now doesn't set a Precedent for future stop muskie stocking complaints. In other words another lake assoc could not cite this situation as a basis for their compliant. So good news there if true.

I may have missed someone but I saw the following M.I. Chapters in attendance

Fargo-Moorehead
Vikingland
Duluth-Superior
Brainerd
Twin Cities
North Metro.
Hope I didn't miss anyone.

Hey guys, every time you wonder if Muskie guys will step up to plate and fight for their sport? I have had moments where I feel let down, tonight was not that night.... I am in aaww of you guys, from guys 18 years old that are new to that sport to the guys that have been fishing Muskies for over 40 years ...Each and every one of you brought yourselves ready to battle for the fish you love....Awesome is all I can say is awesome....I am so proud and to see younger guys ready to step up to plate...Think everything worked out well but this battle is not over.

I want to thank the Brainerd Chapter of MI, St Cloud Chapter of MI, Fargo/Moorhead Chapter of MI, and especially the North Metro and Twin Cities Chapters along with Thorne Brothers for getting the word out and taking the time out of your busy lives to show up........ It was absolutely huge..... Like I said I am AAAWWW

and did not forget about my home town Chapter ( Vikingland) thanks Katie

I believe we swayed her with our cool demener and i am hoping she was their when the salty old geezer got up and didnt listen to the DNR's response and "argued" with him.

Didn't one of the gentlemen claim last night that the litigation the Lake assoc. initiated was partly due to the fact that the lake had not been surveyed in 32 years? correct me if I am wrong, I was stuck partially in the hall way at the time. But this lake survey from 2011 depicts a pretty healthy fishery.

Where do we go next? Probably some place where we're not always on the defensive. We have to continue growing this sport every way we can (bringing new people out, marketing muskies as the ultimate profile pic, changing mindsets so that lake homeowners brag about having big muskies in their lake) and aligning with the other conservation groups out there to support the MN DNR in their science-based management.

What you guys showed tonight was exactly what these small groups complain about - we're passionate and organized. I wish I could've been there. Unfortunately I was traveling. Great work

He was saying that a population assessment has not been completed. His being along the lines of a mark/recapture to get a good estimate on the true number in there.

While this could be good data to have, it really isn't entirely necessary because the current survey data shows that there is zero impact on the rest of the fishery.

The second counter point to that would be, they're not willing to listen to the current data as it is so why would they listen to the population assessment data? In my opinion that was a weak attempt to save face because someone was getting absolutely toasted at the meeting he wanted.

Sounds like a cliche but we definitely sent the message last night that "You mess with some of us- You mess with ALL of us",,,I'm very proud of the musky people we have in this state we overwhelmed them with attendance and science by our wonderful DNR. I'm off today on Friday and am too tired to fish, However I am going to treat myself to a very good meal and a bottle of the "GOOD" top shelf whiskey in celebration. And I will raise my first glass to all those who showed up last night an say "THank you it was an honor to stand with you"

These lake association folks scare me a bit (the ones beyond pelican). Even though they talk of the lake being public, the reality, or "their reality" is they believe the lakes are theirs. I think whenever these lake associations have public meetings with with dnr, state reps, etc..Muskies inc, or other fishing groups need to be present as well.

So, does anyone know when the judge is supposed to rule on the injunction? what will be done with the fish that should be stocked, or should have been stocked already?
thanks for the info and your efforts

If they filed an injunction to stop this year fall stocking the judge should rule before that is scheduled to happen. But, judges take their own sweet time doing the research etc to try and get the law correct when ruling

I mean the judge might want to look into it further or like Tommy boy say you can get a good look at a T bone steak by sticking you head up a bulls arse or you can take the DNRs word for it

One thing the D.N.R. guys made clear a couple of times is that they're well aware that the lakes are public waters and belong to all.

For more info about water laws in Minnesota

http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/publications/waters/water_law_question...

http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/waters/watermgmt_section/pwpermits/water...

From: https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/?id=103G.005

Subd. 15.Public waters. (a) "Public waters" means:
(1) water basins assigned a shoreland management classification by the commissioner under sections 103F.201 to 103F.221;
(2) waters of the state that have been finally determined to be public waters or navigable waters by a court of competent jurisdiction;
(3) meandered lakes, excluding lakes that have been legally drained;
(4) water basins previously designated by the commissioner for management for a specific purpose such as trout lakes and game lakes pursuant to applicable laws;
(5) water basins designated as scientific and natural areas under section 84.033;
(6) water basins located within and totally surrounded by publicly owned lands;
(7) water basins where the state of Minnesota or the federal government holds title to any of the beds or shores, unless the owner declares that the water is not necessary for the purposes of the public ownership;
(8) water basins where there is a publicly owned and controlled access that is intended to provide for public access to the water basin;
(9) natural and altered watercourses with a total drainage area greater than two square miles;
(10) natural and altered watercourses designated by the commissioner as trout streams; and
(11) public waters wetlands, unless the statute expressly states otherwise.
(b) Public waters are not determined exclusively by the proprietorship of the underlying, overlying, or surrounding land or by whether it is a body or stream of water that was navigable in fact or susceptible of being used as a highway for commerce at the time this state was admitted to the union.

What I thought was the most ironic and humorous part of the evening occurred in the Men's Room after the meeting broke up. I'm standing there at the urinal taking caring of business and a guy steps up to the one next to me, turns and says; "I hope I hit the hole." I turned and looked at him and saw he was wearing a cap from the Minnesota Darkhouse Assoc. It took all I could to keep from laughing. I didn't say a word to him.

Yeah, you're telling me you can't hit the hole yet here you are at a meeting representing an activity that involves throwing a spear down a hole.

Classic!!!

An account listed by the Pelican Lake association as evidence of muskie aggression and predation http://www.pelicanlakemn.org/editorials.html

July 1983 – Rhinelander, Wisconsin
A seven-foot long muskie scared off swimmers from a Wisconsin lake after it bit a 13-year-old girl. Amber Fairley said she was pulled a few inches into the water by the fish before it let her go. “I even have teeth marks on my toes. My whole foot is all mutilated. It’s really gross-looking,” Fairley said. The doctor had to use 15 stitches to close the wound. The muskie attack was confirmed by the doctor, fishermen and sheriff’s deputies.

So a 7 ft muskie took a 13year old girl 3 or 4 inches under water before it let her go. WOW she is quoted as saying she didn't know what it was so it might have been Big Foot. The article did saw the water was murky or what time of day it was. If muskie attack in murky water the swimmers in Pelican are safe since the water is really clear due the zebras.

Great play by play pointer. Thanks! I wasn't able to attend but was there in heart. Thanks for showing support for the people who weren't able to make it. Sounds like it was a good turnout.

I concur with Todd that we should stay in point/counterpoint loop regarding this one.
In fact, I was lucky enough to secure a rather compelling photo I suspect might be used for building their next case around.

And on the page opposite Rob's article, the one by Kirk S opposing stocking Gull Lake. What a bunch of bs - blatant bias, opinion, innuendo, ahnd non-facts. Isn't he the guy that led the fight against muskies in Miltona? What a tool. Rob is probably as biased in the opposite direction as nice tryker, but at least he writes objectively and uses facts and common sense to weave his tale.

I actually went to the meeting from Vermilion and was really surprised at how many Muskie People showed up.. Great job Guys !
The opposition seemed discombobulated at the way the DNR and the facts were in favor of the muskie community....
It seemed that the "Lake Association "
were trying to say that they owned the area lakes and that they should dictate what happens to "Their" Lakes... Thank God that the
DNR stuck up for the Biology and Science of their studies of these bodies of water.
We did make a difference this time.
I also must say Shame on the State Rep. that said, when he opened the Meeting..." I Hate Muskies"
This kind of closed minded person should be replaced the next election.

He was actually addressing comments that have been made about him via emails and phone calls.

I'm not sure he's exactly pro musky, but I did hear in the crowd that he was pretty neutral on this topic.

Be interesting to see how it goes in court. Requesting an injunction to stop stocking is an interesting approach. I think the court date is 11/20.

I love this claim that people won't use the waters for fear of being attacked by muskies. I'm pretty sure every lake that's stocked with muskies in the metro area has 1 or more beaches, they are always packed during the summer, and I don't recall stories about how people are getting attacked each summer...

All you have to do is go to big island on tonka any day during the summer to see that statement is false.

I believe most hearings are conducted in the court room which is open to the public. A call to the clerk of courts in that county would probably give you the scheduled time of the hearing.

That I'm not sure on. I was out of the office in meetings and didn't know they were going in.

I put in pelican on 11-9-15 and while idling away I looked over the side and saw a couple nice 12" spotted muskies. Good to see
