Location: Rice Lake,WI | It's now happened on 2 outings in a row. Big fish coming up and grabbing your struggling panfish. Today I had to respect the speed of the feast.
I casted out and as soon as bobber met water a 42-43 did the full porpoise grab "death from above" manuever and fish on right? She was on a gill that
I didn't even realize was on because of the speed of the musky taking what
I thought was my fathead. This morning we seen 2 42" and 45 hangin'out
and doing their thing. A much larger fish upper 40's chased down a nice sized crappie 3-4' from the boat. These fish were feeding aggressively
and I think I know where I'm heading Sat.! Water temps today were 53.4.
Depth was 18"-2'. |

| Nuttin better than local live bait! If it's legal where you are, of course.

Location: Sheboygan Falls, WI | It's legal in Wisconsin. The bait has to be legal size and counted as part of your daily bag limit. Walleye fishermen love it when they see you soaking a 15" walleye over the side of the boat!

| Yup it is legal. One of my favorite tricks for pike through the ice is a 4-6" blugill/sunfish/crappie! I've also heard from a guide in Hayward that soaking a nice Crappie is like stealing! |

Location: Lafayette, IN | I've asked but never got a reply..... Can I bring a "Prepared" ( salted and iced) sucker from my creek in Indiana and use it as a decoy on a float (quick strike of course!) in Minnesota? |

| Sure, but then you couldn't cast. MN has a single rod/lure rule, I believe. Or is it 2? |

Location: Lafayette, IN | Ah, yes. Thanks for reminding me, Shep. I guess the wife will have to get a license after all, eh? I know the locals frown on live bait on Vermilion for musky. At least that's the impression I get in 4 years of being up there. Dave, Ace, Cliff...want to weigh in on this? Thnx! p.s. just kidding about fishing on my wife's license. I don't buy that stuff!

| One rod for most MN waters. Two for the Miss and a few other waters.

| Yup,
You gotta keep your head screwed on tight in MN. I came back from a weekend in Northerm Wisconsin last fall, where we were dragging suckers while casting.
One of the suckers was still in the tub so I got back to Minneapolis and casted while I had him hanging on a Maina rig off the dock.
Um, that wasn't a good idea, and I found out that I could have been fined over $100 for more than 1 rod.
A dude at work told me he quit fishing because he got busted with 2 rods out off his dock, one was his wife's and she had just run up to the house to use the bathroom.
Anyway, the DNR guy stopped and ticketed him, and he said he was so ticked that he refuses to fish ever again in MN.
That'll show 'em!
Later,

Location: Hayward, WI | I caught a 'ski on a crappie last year. Had it just sitting over the side of the boat for followers and lo and behold, she took it. The best artificial lure in the world can't imitate food as well as a real, live, tasty crappie can.

Location: Sheboygan Falls, WI | This is how I rig them. I use a 12 inch seven strand leader and put a treble hook (size depends on the size of the bait) on the end. I put one hook from the treble just under the skin by the tail. I tie a small single hook to a small loop of superline and have that free-sliding on the leader. I then take this hook and put it through the skin on the cheek of the fish. With this setup I can quickly change from a 4 inch bluegill to a larger rock bass or walleye. When you set the hooks, they will rip out of the bait. It works pretty good and I've never gut hooked with this rig. Ocasionally I do miss the musky, but that just means he gets a free meal. |
