In your opinion what is the absolute best lake to musky and walleye fish in the state? I am going up the 22-26 of next month. I am looking at staying on te three lakes chain but I have done good in the past at squirrel lake near minocqua. I can't decide where to go when I start reading I get even more confused about where I want to go. I will be taking my wife and want to go somewhere the fishing is good.

Those would be great but I'm looking for a place that I can fish no matter what the wind is doing. My wife does not like rough long boat rides. That's why I am looking at the smaller inland lakes/flowages.

the willow and the rainbow flowages are the best locally for walleye fishing but i wouldn't make a trip here expecting a great walleye outing and it could get overwhelming. for muskies if you are staying on the 3-lakes chain you could consider the sugar camp chain, some of the rhinelander area lakes can be really good and then you aren't terribly far from eagle river and outside of the chain there are a bunch to pick from from small quiet lakes to swing for the fences water.

within a short drive there is more water than you

I'd think long and hard about the Manitowish Chain. Island Lake. I have some great memories of walleye catches and musky action in the fall out there. My father and I used to do that a lot when I was a kid. If my calendar allows it, I'll be up there fishing Island at some point this fall.

Mani Chain is my favorite this time of year and not far from the Turtle Flambeau ... that's where I'd go/stay if i could go anywhere up here.

Thanks guys I'm going to look into the manitowish chain any recommendations for a place to stay? Where ever we go the cabin has to be under $100 a night this is a last minute budget trip.

Ok so the wheels are turning now and I have to ask, turtle or mani? I love the wilderness of turtle but I want action on walleye and musky. I would kill to get my wife her first fish.

Mani=muskie
TFF=walleye

Not saying you can't catch a muskie in the TFF or a walleye in the Mani, but you have a better chance of getting the muskie skunk off on the Mani and a better chance of getting a limit of eye's on the TFF.

walleye fishing in Wisconsin other than the first part of the ice fishing season is a crap shoot if you ask me ... it's definitely NOT Red Lake, Devils Lake or Lake Erie ... and not what i'd call "easy".

"action" on muskies is all relative ... if you know what you're doing you'll find some action, if not ... well ...

and ^ what he said.

there are a couple slump-buster lakes but filled with rats ...

I don't know that you can beat the musky/walleye combo on Island Lake in the fall. I had more than a few days out there with dad catching walleyes on jig and minnows while running into a muskie or two via a sucker.

I would think that you can find good accommodations right in Boulder Junction. There are quite a few hotels there and you are minutes away from some great lakes.

I've never put a boat in on the TFF. But from what I've heard, that is not a density musky fishery. Big gals for sure, but probably not up there in terms of density.

I called a place on fawn lake on the chain just now and she said they lower the water levels starting this weekend and she wouldn't even rent me a cabin. She told me that the lake will be too low to be able to get in and out of the chan else

yah, the channel to clear would be tricky but if you find a place on spider, island, mani or little star you can get around but would probably have to launch and load to fish clear or rest and maybe island. trailering and then launching and loading at Greer's is what i would do.

another thing to consider is that this weekend is apple fest up north and cranberry fest in ER so there will be the fall color tourists and it will be busy but not crazy.

Called most of the cabins that are on the chamber of comerce page that were in my price range and they are all either closed for the season or won't rent because of water levels. Any help would be much appreciated in locating a place to stay.

Looks like I struck out on manitowish for a cabin. How about some other places?

Big st germain is looking pretty promising and a lot of cabins for rent that fit into the budget as well.

I'd give the Cisco Chain a look, especially in the Fall. For cabins, check on Vacationland Resort, on Thousand Island Lake.

Really good question on the original post. From my experience, you can't go wrong with a lot of the areas/lakes that have already been mentioned.

Sounds like you're interested in a numbers lake to try and catch your wife's first musky. If you do some searches on this forum or look at some stocking info from years past, you'll be able to find some water where you'll have a good chance at a fish.

Back to the original question; I'd personally choose the Mani Waters/Winchester area or Mercer. A lot of good water and great northwoods scenery at both.

As mentioned, do a quick search on number lakes for the Mani Waters area. There's other lakes to fish besides the Chain that will give you a good shot at a fish.

Someone else nailed it, in stating the TF Flowage is a quality walleye factory, but isn't what I'd consider a 'numbers' musky lake, especially for someone new to the body of water. Too many good looking spots all over the place, and it takes some time to figure out what's dead water and what areas consistently holds muskies. However, there are a lot of good numbers lakes nearby in Mercer that are easy to get to with quality launches. And, if you do fish the Flowage, you have a shot at fish-of-a-lifetime (Wisconsin wise) every cast you take.

have you considered Pitlicks Sand Beach Resort on the Sugar Camp Chain? it's a great fishing chain and the cabins there are really cool and authentic with a great bar and restaurant right on sight and easy access to many more lakes close by.

Going to be staying on big st getmain lake. Finialy got a call back from one of the cabins I called the other day. From what I hear big st germain is a good lake for both musky and walleye and the article say decent action as well.

Manitowish would get my vote too. Tons of different lakes all in one chain, so depending on the bite you have a lot of options

Further west, but the Chippewa Flowage is good for both musky and walleye.

I would like to stop in at fibers I have heard them mentioned many times now.

As far as big st germain goes what is the water color like? What's the shoreline like? Bottom contour looks pretty good to me big bowl with a few points and bars looks pretty easy to fish. Any pointers from you guys who have been here good colors or baits you like. Any help would be great I am kind of taking a shot in the dark going here but theirs always a first time for every lake.
