When trolling at 3-4mph is it even worth using my kicker? I wonder what is going to use more fuel the 150 at just over idle (900rpms) gets me 3.0-3.5mph, or use the kicker motor at half- 3/4 throttle? I have been wondering this for a while now.

I would think it has to burn less fuel. I can troll all weekend on 3 gallons with the kicker. Also keeps hours off the main outboard.

Really? The reason I ask is because I have done both but never paid any attention to the fuel gauge. i just thought that the little motor working harder and spinning mor Rpms would use more fuel. Then I think how much bigger the 150's displacement is and I just keep wondering.

i know the peace of mind is very nice knowing i have another motor i can use to get back in case my big motor goes down. i like trolling with the kicker, quieter and burns less fuel for me, and i really don't think the big motor is designed for trolling. just my .02.

I use a portable 3 gallon tank on my kicker. I still have fuel left over after a weekend of trolling. Mine is a mercury 8hp 4 stroke. What is yours?

My 150 cost about 5 times the cost of the kicker, I like to keep the hours on the kicker.

I agree with the price of mind having a second motor incase of emergency. I guess I am just so used to only using it to slow troll for walleye and salmon that I never really used it for the faster musky speeds. The 9.9 Yamaha pushes my boat 5.7mph at wide open throttle. The kicker is by far louder than my four stroke 150 Yamaha at all trolling speeds.
