For you guys out there tying your own bucktails. What type of vise are you using to tie bucktails on bucktail coil? I have a couple fly tying vises from my fly fishing days, one of which is heavy enough to hold up to 7/0 treble hooks. What do I need for tying on coil? Really don't want to buy another vise...

The only vise I know of designed for tying coiled wire is available from Moore's Lures and costs about 150 bucks.

This is a little different, but I use two vice grips when making leaders and bucktails. I use one to hold the wire and the other to twist around. It works pretty good.

I saw the vise at Moores. I was hoping there were other options... Looks like a nice vise though.

I don`t tie on coiled wire. I tie on plastic tubing like is used for Lake Michigan flies. I just lay alot of thread down first so it doesn`t slip. That way I use my jig tying vise and put a section of nail in the vise and slide the tubing over the nail. It works very nicely and at no extra cost.

I use a regular fly tying vise for the bucktail coil. You need to bend the last loop on coil so it makes a 90 degree angle with the rest of the coil. Then clamp the loop that is bent outwards into the vise and the coil will be straight out just like a hook shank.

I use just a 3" workbench vise attached to the end of my workbench. Works great and it was just a cheap one too! I'm righthanded, so I feed the coil through from the left so it sticks out on the right side of the vise, tie on the bucktail and then cut off the coil to the length I want. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than catching fish on my own baits. (and it's a lot cheaper too)

Good luck[]

I use a Regal Rotary vise for tying Steelhead flies. I have gone through quite a few vises until I got my Regal. I don't know if it will handle 7/0 hooks, but I think it should. The biggest I have ever used on it were 3/0 for some Dahlberg Divers, but it worked fine for that. You should be able to find one at any flyshop or try cabelas.com or kaufmans streamborn (don't know their web address, but could find it if you need it).
