I seem to have to bring the lure in pretty darn fast to keep it on the surface and it seems to go sideways a lot...wondering if that's just how this bait is. It sounds great, got it squealing good and everything, wish I could fish it a bit slower though.

Funny that you mention this, I bought one last week and was thinking the same thing. I'm using a 60 NACL too. It was almost comparable to burning 8's. If i didnt go fast enough it would just sink.....

Yeah, I'm using a lexa 300 high speed, and I really gotta crank fast!

Also keep the tip high when you start cranking

Try cupping the blade a little more. That will slow it down. Keep your rod tip up in the first part of the retrieve. The strikes are pretty violent and there isn't much trouble hooking up with these baits, even at a little faster pace than most top waters. You're right to say it's similar to a bucktail, so you can use it in situations where a little more speed is key to get a bite. In my experience, they follow for 10 feet and just bite it rather than staring it down all the way to the boat.

also need to make sure that your not "moving the boat" into the bait on retrieve. very perpendicular casts that tail in seem to work the best. its a bit of a bugger to get to work right but it is worthy as it is a high % bait. as mentioned the cupping will help some and JUST getting it to klack helps get it going. if the blade hits too hard it seems to have more startup issues.
