| I finally bought one of those telescoping poles that can dislodge a lure that gets snagged. It works, sometimes. The problem with this thing it can be difficult to use effectively, especially if there is a wind. Lost a depth raider that got snagged on a crib yesterday because I couldnt get it to dislodge the lure. Curious if anyone has any suggestions for a GOOD retriever that works?

| SCUBA gear will work 100% of the time. [;)] But that’s about it.
Of course I am being a wise butt, but I couldn’t help myself. I have a Frabill 12 footer and it is awesome and has already saved me probably 20x what I paid for it. Since I got it 3 years ago I have only lost one bait. That was because I was stupid and impatient and before I pulled the retriever out I tried to pull the bait free from a reverse angle. The line broke on me. The only other time I witnessed a failed retrieve with the Frabill, was when a buddy had a fuzzy duzzit stuck about 15 feet down. He has the 18 footer. It was at the end of a tourney and we where right in the middle of a channel and boats started buzzing past us. Rather then stay and try and get the bait for a long period of time after a couple jabs at it he gave up and cut his line. We also didn’t want to give away that we where fishing that spot. Trying to unsnagged a lure there would have given it away in a hurry.
I fish a stump filed flowage often and there isn’t a bait in my box that I wont throw as long as I have my Frabill retriever with me, including my Hughes River, that I my wife paid $45 for, and more importantly my lucky Jerko that has accounted for 20 fish in the last two years. I would kill someone if I lost that bait.
I agree that if you are alone in a strong wind the retriever can be tough to use, but if you are willing to take the time and position the boat right it can be done, just take your time. But even then there will be cases when you may not retrieve the bait. Some times it is not the bait that hangs up but the leader. You get a leader stuck under the bark of a stump nothing will get it out except a human hand. I haven’t run into this on a deep snag yet but have had it happen 2 to 3 feet down. The a long arm comes in handy.
Good Luck

| Mike, right on with the scuba gear. I think what happened yesterday was as you described most likely the leader being snagged. In the end I retrieved line and leader less the DR. The leader snap somehow straightened out from all the jabbing and poking. I dont think I ever came into contact with the bait itself. Does the Frabill you use have a "coil" on the end or some other design?

| Here is a description of the best lure retriever I have seen,I made it myself but have seen some guides use it,that is where I got the idea...It is about 8" circle( metal) with 3 pieces of chain hanging off the sides. All you have to do is put a strong rope on the rig, slide it over your reel and pole, and line, down to your stuck lure and try and get one of the chains hooked. Then all you have to do is pull out the lure with the rope and you get everything back, might have a bent hook, but hooks are cheap.I hope I have helped and good Luck,Paul | |

| 50-80 lb superline and a 200 lb test leader...works everytime | |

| Interesting, I have a lure retriever that I made that is almost identical to what fishin''fool described. I attached 70 ft. (the max. depth of the lake) of 200 lb nylon rope (easier on the hands than heavy cord or fishing line because of the thickness) on it and wrap it around one of those dumbell type fishing markers. To retrieve a lure I attach the ring w/chains on the line and then all I have to do is throw the whole thing overboard. I get most of my lures back, and have gotten them back as deep as 30-40 ft. deep. I use Power Pro 80 lb. line for trolling and get hung up a lot in a tree infested lake. The heavy line will not break from the friction or weight of the lure retriever (lighter lines will break). The lure retriever really pays for itself. You can purchase the rings (they have a slot for the line to go thru) from Cabelas or Bass Pro. They do not come with chains and are not heavy enough. Add them yourself and it will make it heavy enough to knock a lure off a tree either by catching the hooks or knocking it off from the weight of the retriever. | |
