Location: Plymouth, MN | My partner Tov and I got out for a couple of hours last night just in time to catch some long awaited muskie action. Shortly after setting up on one of our favorite spots I hooked into and landed a nice 45. After a couple of pics and watching her swim away safely, Tov said I'm going to blades (he'd been throwing a medussa up to that point). I hadn't even gotten my lure back in the water when I hear him yell Joe, got one, followed by that all too familiar sound of disappointment. She got off. He was convinced she was an upper 40's class fish, maybe bigger. Anyway, we continued to fish, shortly after which I had a smaller one try to take my bucktail on the 8, only to get off. It was time to make a short move, and before firing up the engine, Tov notices a decent bend in the wire of his dbl-10, and then on closer inspection he noticed the upper treble was gone. You can imagine our total reaction of disbelief. How the bleep did that happen? How does a fish manage to run off with a hook that was threaded on a triple wolverine split ring? We could only conclude that the hook must have been partially unwound on the split ring. We're both good about checking equipment and lures, but this one slipped by. Guess who will be checking split rings more closely going forward.

Location: MN | Or the fish gets hooked breaks a bad weld on the treble hook gets off and then and hook slips off when the lure pops up or during casting. I notice a bad weld on hooks maybe 1 out of 100 maybe less. |

| Yup...just last week. Set the hook on a upper 40" fish and after a nice jump and hard pull...gone. I bring my Pounder back to the boat and notice the treble hook and split ring is gone. The fish somehow took both....1st time it's ever happened to me but could not believe it happened. |

| Now that I think about it, I have had a couple hooks start to work their way out of a split ring before I don't remember if they were Wolverines, but I'll be checking that from now on.

| Had a big fish pull the rear treble off a Reef Hawg on LOTW. Upon further examination of the bait, I saw one large tooth, and felt several other buried in the top of the Reef Hawg. Named the fish and the spot Toothless Bi-tch!

Location: Sycamore, IL | I had this happen last week trolling a headlock...one big run and the line went slack. Triple split ring and hook gone...drag was not even very tight. Chit happens...

| My partner lost a 50" on Vermillion this way. Fishing pike and bass with a Bomber A, a muskie hit and was gone near the boat when the middle treble and the split ring disappeared. |

| had it happen twice. Fortunate to have landed both. They pretzeled the split rings. One luckily had the treble off the bait in the corner of its mouth an pinned the upper and lower jaw shut and that kept me from losing the fish as the other treble still on the bait was barely hooked in her. |

| This has happened to me as well. Those triple rings are mad with too soft of wire. Bucher rings replace any stock rings on all my baits for years. I also use them to connect my leader to my lure (I make my own single strand steel leaders with a very small round bend to tie the line onto and a barrel swivel on the end that the split ring attaches the lure with. I've also lost fish when the snap opened on its own. It takes some time to become quick at attaching and removing lures but it is IMHO the only way to attach a lure to your leader. It also saves your hands from wear and tear from opening stiff snaps. Zero failures in MANY catches! |

Coincidentally, we both changed our snaps right before we started fishing that night. So, we had that covered, but I guess the muskie gods found another weak link. We will be checking the split rings and hook eyes from now on.

Interesting on the use of a split-ring for lure-attachment!!! might have to go that route some time in the future myself... though, I don't know what knot I'd use in that case (I tie all my leaders from either heavy mono or fluoro), perhaps a perfection loop would be a good choice... might have to try some stuff out!!!

| I've had a few buddies have it happen to them also while using the triple ring split rings... Seems illogical that an extra ring would be less efficient, but like said above, they are way softer than a regular Bucher/ Spro style split ring. |

Location: B;acksburg Virginia | In 2007 I caught a 40 inch 18 pound muskie on a black suick it was my very first cast of the day. after I released her and casted again and ended up getting a 44 inch 24 pound musky it was a wonderful day. it is the only time I have ever caught 2 muskies back to back

| BAD luck.... nothing more to say about it.... don't be TOO disappointed... it'll happen again... and again... that is why we fish and fight these bastards!!!  Don't take yourself too seriously and life gets easier!!!

| I've had a treble come apart at the brazed joint while I was sharpening it! Now I give a yank on the brazed on point before I put a new treble in use. |

It happens with the best of hooks... I always inspect mine I found 2-3 questionable welds or brazes this winter on new hooks. They might have been fine but I didn't want to risk it. I was looking at a lot of hooks. |
