What is your preference, why? Is there any difference in the two?

fish have to eat...but if I'm planning a trip I do look at when I will be on the water.. ie, I prefer the majority of the hours on a trip when the moon is down...

Full moon. You're blind as a bat during the new moon.

Give me a full moon in September only because last year on the Sept. full moon we put 3 50" plus and a 46 in the boat.
Years ago I logged inches caught per hour of effort for about 1000 fish caught by myself and boat partners under all moon periods and what I considered periods of no lunar influence. I took periods of lunar influence to be the day of the new moon and the 3 days either side and the day of the full moon and the 3 either side all other days were considered periods of no lunar influence. There was a slight advantage to the periods of full and new with the new very slightly better. This advantage was not enough to plan a trip around and if it was a heavily fished lake I would plan to go at other times. LOCAL WEATHER TRUMPS ALL.

In the record I kept If you fished 10 hours and had a 40 inch fish you had 4 inches per hour. If I did it again I would give single points for fish 30 to 39 inches double points for fish 40 to 49 inches and triple points for fish over 50 inches. Those results might be revealing.

Actually you right in looking back the thousand number came from a different thing we were tracking which involved many Muskies Canada members. I was able to find an old copy of the results and the actual number of my fish was 359 if you are interested in the breakdown send me an email and I can provide them.
Unfortunately a lot of old records I kept are on floppy disks that I can no longer open. I wish I had had used a different means of saving things.

The only reason I would say full moon is because you can actually see what is going on around you. Even with the full moon it is hard to see your baits coming up to the boat. I know you can use lights but for some reason I get the feeling the fish will spook from lights. (don't quote me on that)

Give me a new moon ANY DAY over a full moon from June-September. I love being on the water when it's pitch black, minus the stars, and getting crunched.

Dave is correct. I was just curious as to what opinions were on each as I am heading to Canada this weekend. I won't be night fishing. It seems that both phases have been good to everybody. Thanks for the opinions.

I was in Canada last week and really noticed an uptick in activity during the "moon set- minor" Whenever we hit that period in the day we had good flurries of action.

Muskyroller, what site did you use to find those times? I can only seem to find the moon rise and moon sets, no major or minor info.

This year in my time on the water there has been better fishing around the full moon. This usually varies from year to year for me and, as always, local weather conditions are the main factor.
