Location: Forest Lake, MN | I am thinking about making a purchase. I used to fish with mainly friends who were fairly skilled and it was never an issue but recently moved home. Now I spend a fair amount of time fishing with my 80 year old dad, who is skilled, but frequently needs help, and my brother who has never really fished. I find that I have to help out often enough that I cant run the trolling motor properly. Thinking an i pilot might be the solution so I am not having to run it, just let it run the line. Do i just need the motor, do I need the hummin bird to go with it. What am I looking at spending, I can afford about $2,000 at the max right now. |

Location: sneaking out to get on the water ;-) | If you get just the ipilot terrova you don't have to get the hbird. If you're looking to get the ilink then you will also want a new hbird and the lakemaster chip for your area. I have an ipilot and even just upgrading to that will make life simpler. |

Location: Watersmeet, Michigan | Like Wicked said, to use the iPilot Link's special functions, you'll need a newer Humminbird with Lakemaster maps.
To do the job you describe, however, the standard iPilot will be fine. You can record a track and let the motor follow it, or just point it in the direction you want to go and the AutoPilot will keep you on your course even in moderate wind.
The only thing I'd add is to get the most powerful motor your boat can accomodate (depending on number of batteries), and the longest shaft available - you'll appreciate it when you're bouncing in the waves.

BTW, Wicked, you really need to work on that name!

Are you positive that you're running it on the right settings? And by that I mean when you hit the gps button is there an arrow with an N above it with a circle around it? If there's no circle its set to just go that direction, whereas if you have the circle around it the unit creates gps markers along the way and its supposed to go to each point along the way, creating a more true line in windy/wavy conditions. |

| Dave T you are probably using the advanced autopilot. Hold the N button until the circle goes away and it will track straight. |

Ive only noticed a red line when ive turned it on, and it never seemed to be pointing in the right direction..
Ill mess with it some more.
