Spotted Cow isn't a "flavored" beer, but I agree that it is overrated.

Surly beers are also overrated in my opinion. It almost as if the brewmaster just discovered hops and over hops everything he brews. Blech....

#*^@ right. Both completely overrated. I like hoppy but there are too many johnny come lately brewmasters now that overdo the hops, package it up so it sells, and people jump all over it because it's trendy. "It tastes like hell, but I sure feel cool ordering it!"

Spotted Cow is a traditional "farmhouse ale". No added flavoring. The hops they use are not as bitter as some.

If you want a really good beer, a lager, try Two Women from New Glarus. Really a crisp, clean taste. Probably the best lager style beer I have had.

Mauston Park Oasis carries it - exit 69, take right off the ramp. Or take a left, there's liquor store about 1/4 mile, past 1st light on your right. J&S Liquors. He also has great deli next door..

While you're off the interstate get some fresh curds - Carr Valley Cheese!

Got to agree about some of these over hopped brews, like what kind of pallate they have, might as well chew some hops!

Have fun!

Also, I really don't like hoppy beers. I have spring allergies and I'm allergic to pollen and they set them OFF - halfway through a beer I'll start sneezing sometimes.

Just go to the live well and pull out a can of Old Milwaukee that's been sitting there for the season....uhm! Nothing beats a Point Special in my opinion for boat comfort and celebration. That's as original and refreshing as it gets. Plus who doesn't love the retro cans?

Capital Brewing, Lakefront (IPA's awesome btw), and Fox River Brewing (Oshkosh) get my preference over Glarus.

If I'm dropping $9+ on a six pack, Bell's Two-Hearted is a close 2nd to South Shore's Nut Brown Ale.
I find Spotted Cow bland. Fat Squirrel and Two Women are much better New Glarus beers.

I agree Spotted Cow is overrated. That said, anything New Glarus makes is far superior beer to Rolling Rock or Leinie's. You may like the taste of those more and that's fine but those are low quality beers.

If you want high quality beer on your way north stop at the Brewhouse in Duluth. They have tons of good brews and you can sample prior to purchasing. They only sell in growlers though since they are a brewpub. If you need cans stop at store in Duluth or Superior and get some Bent Paddle.

The Germans know what their doing! Koenig Pilsner, St Paulie Girl, Haugh Brau, and regular old Becks. Good stuff! Let's face it, all beers taste great after a nice muskie of any size is boated. A big one and Blatz would be good if that's all you had in the boat;)

When did Rolling Rock add flavor? It's more like a green bottle of water. Holzhacker Lager from Bull Falls Brewing in Wausau will be my celebration beer on LOTW this year. Their 5 Star aint bad either. I don't associate with people who think bud light is real beer.

seems to me like it's one of those citrus injected beers that are good at first and then you realize it's a syrup overpowering a hoppy beer.

Leinenkugels wrote the book on it. Lemon Berry Shandy? Sounds terrible. Summer Shandy, is terrible. Berry Weiss? Grapefruit Shandy? Haven't gone there. I do like the Leinies Red Lager and their very underpromoted and not widely enough available, Original. If I want some natural citrus I'll toss an orange slice in one of the wife's Blue Moon's.

On a lager note, I'm diggin the 'Supper Club' from Capital Brewery that my friend Erik turned me onto. Very soft hopping, only semi sweet, with a nice dry slightly bitter finish that cuts the sweet unlike some of the aforementioned seasonals. While a bit pricey at $9.99 a sixer for a year rounder brewed within a hundred miles of my home, it's a nice deviation from my standby macros.

Leinenkugels fell prey to marketing to the urbanites like Nershi ... long live the original! thankfully they still make it ... a shame the original bock is no longer available. it was a tradition and we hoarded it like currency back in the day.

Steel reserve,,,,for the delicate palette

In college I lived in a house with 8 other guys. We'd "steel reserve" each other. Basically hide the box and if someone came upon it without "calling it", they had to shotgun a steel reserve right there. I got up on morning, hid it in the fridge, and proceeded to get every other guy in the place.

Germany has some of the best. After living there for almost 10 years, this brewery's Pilsner is hands down my favorite. They use to deliver a case to my apartment every Friday.... Its hard to beat 485 years of brewing experience. For my 30th birthday party we went through 15 cases of their bier. The Doppel Bock is to die for..

God Bless the Germans ... while in China in the craziness of the rural scene we nicknamed Tsing-Tao (pronounced Ching Dow btw) "The International Plunger". we needed it too many times to count to keep the crazy stuff we ate down. The Germans and the Ausies were the most aggressive travelers and in the case of the Germans, they spread their taste and the making of beer to many of the far parts of the World. My favorite is Hefeweizen and it's on tap here in town. smooth and buttery flavor ... good stuff!

Funny how our tastes change. Back in the day it was Stroh's, Coors, Bud, or whatever else we could swipe from our parents.

Today if I were to be forced to drink one beer for the rest of my life it would be Sprecher. One of the finest beers I have encountered.

Black Bavarian for cold temps, Amber for warmer weather. They make a few seasonals that are outstanding as well. The Doppel Bock comes out around Easter I believe, and is by far the best beer I have ever had. There is also a Mai Bock that's pretty good.

As for celebratory beers in the boat? Anything that's cold. PBR, Old Style, Miller Lite, who cares? As long as it's ice cold and we're drinking it because someone put a fish in the net, any beer is a good beer.

If you're ever in Hudson, hit up the Winzer Stube. It's one of the top rated German restaurants in the country, and their imported beer list is just stupid. During Oktoberfest they usually have at least 6 of them on tap, including Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest (original), which may be the greatest beer ever made. Leinie's Oktoberfest is great, too.

I'm gonna go down as likely the only oddball here. At 65 and after V'Nam I spent 1 1/2 yrs in Germany and tried to like that stuff and it never happened. They supposedly had good beer.

Tried a few times since and nothing's changed...

I'm out...

Sled, its the import version (pasturised), I don't like it versus the rael stuff. But each has his own palate, the real stuff is much better. But Haberstumpf is absolutely liquid gold. There are some really truly great beers in Germany. Most are not known or available beyond a 10 mile radius of the brewery. My last business trip to Germany, I shipped a couple of cases back and also some wine from the Main River Valley (Kitzingen) , incredible wines. Both reds and whites.

That keeps autocorrecting to zegeunernice tryzel....it's supposed to be Z nice tryzel. Pork chops pounded flat, lightly breaded and fried, topped with Black Forest ham, sauteed peppers and onions, and a cream sauce over the top. Chive mashed potatoes and red and white cabbage.

All those trendy beers are over rated and taste bad. Who ever thought fruit would go with beer is way off. I just stick to beers that been around awhile because people like them and don't for those trendy beers that taste great but they don't. Somebody got a B plus in business management and thinks he can reinvent beer. Sorry Charlie your wrong. Rolling Rock,Bud Lite,PBR are great beers. But don't worry trendsetters they have trendy beer tomorrow for you to try for $9 dollars a six pack. If you belive that I got oceanfront property for sale in Kansas for you to look at.

Has nothing to do with trendy. I'd rather pay 9$ for six quality beers that have a good ABV versus watered down crap in a can that is full of calories and water.

It's no different than wine....you can drink good stuff, or you can also drink it out a box.

I mean seriously...PBR is a great beer? Yeah maybe in 1975 ...

Hand crafted beers are a lot like hand crafted musky lures. Most are more expensive than the mass produced stuff, and not all of them are worth the money. But once you learn to appreciate quality and workmanship and can tell the difference between lures that are something special and those that are all hat and no cattle, it's an easy generalization to make.

It's like wine. To some there is red wine and there is white wine. It all costs $4.99 and comes in a screw top bottle or even a box. Once you get further into it you realize that a Merlot is not a Cab is not a Shiraz is not a Zinfandel...

There are a lot of "great" beers out there, but if you don't like Weiss beer, many of them will taste horrible to you. If you're not much of a fan of "hoppy" beers, an IPA is not for you. If you don't like rich heavy beers, than a good oatmeal stout or a nut brown ale will be a waste of money.

Bottom line is there are beers you drink to enjoy the flavor, and beers you drink because it's beer and it's there.

On a 90 degree day, a Busch light tastes great. That doesn't mean it's a great beer.

Have to agree on the screw top wines, though. We've found some of the $10 varieties to be pretty #*^@ good, and some of the $50 varieties to be better for cooking than drinking.

I appreciate most beers and most beer styles. Honestly, I haven't come across many that I don't like. (Although a few of the macro's come to mind).

Watery domestics do have their time and place. That's pretty much summertime to me. Finish mowing the lawn on a hot afternoon in August? A PBR will taste delicious.

I also really love hefeweizens in the summer months. Had a great one at Grinders in Kansas City this past weekend made by the KC Bier Co.

Most other occasions, I'll choose an IPA. Lakefront, Squatters Hop Rising, Bell's Two Hearted, Great Lakes Commodore Perry, are some of my fav's. Each a bit different but all very tasty.

Brings back a bunch of memories. I was in my early twenties, young and a bit dumb as most young GI's.
Based in Wurtzburg, I did a good bit of running around Kitzingen/Schweinfurt areas. The strawberry wines (Erdbervines?? iirc) gave me lots of headaches but I loved it!

Thanks for the memories Al! I grew up much too late I'm afraid.

I mean seriously paying $9 for a six pack wow they got you fooled. Nobody buys beer you just rent it for while. Man its just beer not wine. They got all them wine drinkers thinking that the more expensive wine they buy the better they will be, not quite, the more the seller will become richer. A Cadillac is no more than a fancy Chevy. It sounded odd to me too, but the vast majority of my time spent in Germany was either in Bavaria or Baden-Wurttemberg. Heck, there are noticeable differences in cuisine between northern and southern Bavaria so I don't find it too surprising. The proximity to France probably plays into it as well.

Still, I'm in. Thanks for the recommendation Moltisanti.

Thanks for the heads up on the Winzer Stube! Not many authentic German Gast Haus's in USA. Love the food from all the regions! Most of my experience was Bavaria, but traveling the world post military, German Zigeuner nice tryzel is still a favorite...

I'll have to try theirs!

I'm surprised so many people like their American corn lager with all the options these days. Thats one of the main reasons they are so cheap. I like my beers just malt, yeast, water, and hops. If I have to pay a few extra bucks a 6 pack that's fine with me. Schell's Fire Brick is a great Amber lager, Stone Go To IPA and Mirror Pond Pale Ale are a few of my favorites. Good tasting session able beers.

Presidents liquor 3824 E 2nd St. In Superior as you make your way north along 53. Just got back from our adventure decent 7 fish week despite treacherous heat and winds with a couple 4'ers the highlight. I found Spotted Cow to be an easy drinking ale not terribly hoppy and not citrusy at all. Would definatly get some more next time through and would recommend trying it out if craft beer is your sort of thing. Probably the most appealing thing is you can't get it outside of wisconsin so pick some up and stick a big one.

And spotted cow on tap is a whole different animal than out of the bottle. Almost a different beer altogether.
