Good morning

I just got my Ambassaduer 6600 C4 back from the reelsmith. He had to replace all the gears in it - apparently this type of reel is not built for ripping big rubber lures, which happens to be my favorite musky fishing technique. He suggested I get something a little more heavy duty. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions. I am kind of a cheap person by nature, and I know you get what you pay for, but I can't see myself spending over $300 on a new musky reel right now. What kind of reel should I buy?

Saltist 20 LW is a very good option for rubber and is priced right, but if you want a bullet proof big rubber reel you still cant beat an ole TE 700 if you can find a good used one!

I should probably mention that I wouldn't only use it for big rubber - it'd be my primary rod/reel combo, with my Ambassaduer 6600 becoming my backup.

A reel for primary use that is under $300 and will stand up to heavy Bulldawg ripping? I'm really not sure. I will say that putting your thumb on the spool before each rip will go a long ways towards saving any reel in that scenario. Might sound like a pain but I do it without thinking now.

I think my reels get more beat up by double 10's than they do big rubber baits. The Saltist would be a good candidate for rubber but wouldn't be my first choice as an all purpose reel. It's heavy, and has no spool brakes so casting light stuff into a big wind can be a pain. I like my Abu Revo Toros and Shimano Calcutta B, but not sure how long they would stand up to hard ripping without thumbing the spool.

Yes, the C4 was my primary. I just got into musky fishing a couple years ago so it is the only musky reel I've ever had.

I pound the snot out of my Calcutta 400B's. I abuse them. They hold up very well.
They are tanks for $219. Great all around reel.

Just a plain ABU 7000,,,, $150,,,,adu,s also don't freeze up has much if you big rubber fall fish too. Thumb on the spool,,,Abu anti reverses will eventually go after a couple seasons or one really active one. But it isn't an expensive fix and most times if you take it to one of musky expo Abu clinics they fix it.
