One of the differences between the Beast and the S is the ability on the Beast to adjust the drag when under immense pressure and have it work immediately upon turning back the drag. That's a darn cool feature new feature, but so far I haven't needed it on the S.

Sure. When one has the drag cranked down tight, and a fish hits, and you pin her up, it's usually difficult to release the drag to a lower setting until you get some 'slack line' so the speak. Most folks call this the drag 'locking up'. The Beast adjusts under any conditions in reasonably small increments so you literally can 'feather' the drag.

It's a personal preference. Casts well, very smooth, and 'puts me in touch' with the bait really really well. Hard to describe, but this one shines pretty brightly over all the other reels I have used over the 51 years I've owned a bait-caster.
Here's an image of the NACL, Beast, and S. This should put to rest all the 'that's not a new reel' stuff.

God the beast and the s both look amazing. I just picked up a nacl last year and I absolutely fell in love with it. Seeing you talk about the S and looking at the price point. I think a new reel and rod are in my future.

According to their website the size 50 is 26" of pickup. The size 60 is 29" of pickup. That size 60 is looking like it might go on my Big Nasty as a bucktail reel and move my HS NACL to my jerkbait rod.
Steve, did you throw any twin 10's with the 60 or did you use the 50?

Sweet reel, is my 'go to' now. I tossed (had to keep them in the very top of the water column fishing the slop)#10 spinnerbaits for a few days on the Goon with it, and was very happy with the performance. Used it on two rods, a Veritas 8'6" XH and a St. Croix Legend Elite. Both were great.
The reel outperforms any reel I have used with the exception of the new Toro Beast in it's category. I can't wait to get a 50 in my hands.

For those of us that want a lefty reel it looks like there is finally something to compete with the (Tranx PG @ 30IPT) specifically for tossing double 10s. But I am still unsure which one it would be? Per the web site between the Toro Beast, the S, size 51 & 61 we have 6 combination of IPT to work with. This is the million dollar question that I hope gets answered. When it does I hope production can keep up as I know a bunch of guys waiting for this.

I assume you are not including the TranX as well when making that statement?
I like Shimano reels and own several, but do not prefer the size of the Tranx or other saltwater reels in that category. Too big for me, and too much effort to use, which is a personal preference.
The new Abus do what I personally want them to do really well. And they are not the size or category of the Tranx, which was not designed as a Muskie reel, the Tranx is a 'bluewater' reel adapted to use for muskies.
These reels were designed for the Muskie angler specifically, and the Abu engineers did a great job. I am betting the 50 will do exactly what I want it to do as well, and fit my hands even better than the 60.

But the "reel" question will be are the new Toro's as durable as a Tranx???? I like my Toro's, get get me wrong. But for throwing big blades I grab the Tranx, everytime.

I do have a TranX, but nope, can't say I'm a diehard Shimano fan. I like the reel, but am not a fan of the weight and size of palming it either. Anyway, I was just curious how you felt the new Abus compared to the TranX, that's all...thanks for clearly pointing that out.

The Toro S and Toro Beast are engineered to be #*^@ed tough, I'll be publishing an independent review with a complete tear down of the Toro Beast in a bit....it's impressive.
We've beat them up pretty good, as did the other Muskie anglers who have field tested the reels, and they have been flawless for us. Matched with the 9'7" Beast rod, the outfit is exactly that.
'Grab' what you like! When you try the Toro S and Toro Beast yourself, you can make up your own mind.
Nupe, my apologies, I am obviously annoyed with all the crap getting tossed around by some of the guys running other brands insinuating that our review of the new Abu reels is not accurate. I owned a couple of the Tranx models, I have an Okuma Komodo (great reel for sure), I have a Shimano D, and those reels are exactly what they are sold to be. All of the brands are improving what they offer the muskie angler, including Daiwa. As I said in another thread, I'll buy one of the new Daiwa Lexa stainless geared reels, and look forward to trying it. I had two of the Lexa models, and will offer this: Good reels for the money.
I just didn't like the size, weight, and effort the Tranx required and was trying to be clear that I consider the Tranx a saltwater reel, big, bulky, and undeniably powerful...as a result of being big and bulky. Other folks do prefer that reel, and that's fine.
Doesn't make the new Abus any more or less what THEY are supposed to be, new kick fanny reels designed for the specifically for the Muskie market.
