I have quite a few 8 inch hellhounds. Get tons of follows on them. Was wondering if anyone has added a curly tail to the back of the 8 inch and not changed the action of it? What size would you recommend?

Thanks for any help, will be much appreciated

I use the esox assault killer tails, mostly on the hell puppy. They work good, but with the tail the bait doesn't have as much of a glide. I fished the actual squirly hellhound and the one with the killer tail right after the other. The killer tail definitely adds some drag to hurt the glide, but still effective.

Agree with the esox assault tail - I added to a 7.5" phantom...definitely changed the glide and made them not as effective. Super easy to put on and off, which is nice about adding that type of twister tail.

On another note: I've modified 6" phantoms and 7.5" phantoms to turn them into "squirlys." Works really well. It kind of throws off the weight of the bait and you don't get the downward "shimmy" on the sink, but they still glide really nice. I'm sure you could try the same with the hellhound/puppy.

Prefer the hellhounds without a tail. They are one of the more erratic gliders out there and thats what makes them effective. You lose a lot of that with a soft tail. If you think the fish are looking for a soft tail, I'd reach for a softail phantom or something similar.
